แนวความคิด
Cotton buds(British English) หรือสำลีก้าน ถูกคิดค้นมาตั้งแต่ปี 1920 โดย Leo Gerstenzang เพื่อใช้ในการทำความสะอาดส่วนที่ยากต่อการเข้าถึงและก็เป็นวัสดุที่ถูกใช้มาอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน สิ่งที่ทำให้ Cotton bud ได้รับความนิยมและถูกใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลายไปทั่วโลกคือการสอดเข้าไปในรูช่องหูเพื่อนำเอาขี้หูออกมาเพราะเชื่อว่าขี้หูเป็นสิ่งสกปรกไม่มีประโยชน์และก็ถูกใช้กันเช่นนี้ต่อมาจากรุ่นหนึ่งสู่อีกรุ่นหนึ่งตามคำบอกเล่าต่อๆ กันมา แต่ในความเป็นจริงขี้หูกลับเป็นสิ่งที่มีประโยชน์ที่คอยปกป้องหูชั้นในจากทั้ง เชื้อรา แบคทีเรีย และแมลงเล็กๆที่จะเข้าไปในรูหู

ในแต่ละประเทศได้มีการผลิต Cotton bud ออกมาในรูปแบบ ประโยชน์ สีสันต์ที่แตกต่างกันไปเพื่อดึงดูดผู้คนให้นำมันไปใช้งานตามคำโฆษณาชวนเชื่อต่างๆ และผู้คนก็ได้ใช้กันมาอย่างต่อเนื่องโดยปราศจากสภาวะการรับรู้ กลั่นกรอง ศึกษาถึงภัยอันตรายของการใช้ Cotton bud สอดเข้าไปในรูหู ถึงแม้ว่าบางบริษัทจะติดป้ายคำเตือนห้ามสอดเข้าไปในช่องหูก็ตาม แต่เหตุเพราะว่าเชื่อตามกันมาแล้วว่ามันใช้เพื่อสิ่งนี้ก็เลยใช้กันเพื่อทำความสะอาดช่องหูต่อเนื่องกันมา สถิติในช่วงระหว่างปี 1990-2010 ของ อเมริกาไม่นับรวมทั่วโลก มีผู้ป่วยที่ถูกส่งตัวไปยังห้องฉุกเฉินของโรงพยาบาล ราว 263,338 คน สาเหตุเพราะนำ Cotton Bud เข้าไปทำความสะอาดในช่องหู และก็ยังเกิดขึ้นในทุกๆ ปีทั่วโลกเช่นกัน ในการทำความสะอาดหูสิ่งที่ควรทำคือเช็ดบริเวณรอบใบหูและไม่ควรนำสิ่งแปลกปลอมสอดใส่เข้าไปในรูหู เพราะนอกจากจะเอาขี้หูบางส่วนออกมาแล้วบางส่วนก็จะถูกCotton bud ดันขี้หูบางส่วนเข้าไปติดอยู่ข้างในจนเกิดการสะสมอุดตันได้ และCotton bud ยังมีโอกาสไปเสียดสีกับแก้วหู และทำให้แก้วหูฉีกขาดส่งผลให้เกิดการอักเสบและติดเชื้อตามมา

พูดถึงความเชื่อต่าง ๆของมนุษย์ในโลกก็ล้วนถูกสร้างขึ้นมาโดยน้ำมือของมนุษย์เองมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณกาล อาจจะสร้างขึ้นมาเพราะความกลัว สร้างเพราะไม่ต้องการความแปลกแยกหรือสร้างเพื่อให้มีเป้าหมายในการดำรงชีวิต ก็แล้วแต่ความเชื่อเหล่านี้มันจะดำรงอยู่และจะถูกพัฒนา ดัดแปลง พลิกแพลง ไปทั้งในด้านบวกและด้านลบ หลายๆความเชื่อนั้นเราก็เชื่อตามกันมา ตามคำบอกเล่าจากรุ่นหนึ่งสู่รุ่นหนึ่ง หรือตามคำโฆษณาชวนเชื่อต่าง ๆ ที่บอกให้ทำตามกันไปจนกลายเป็นการอุปทานหมู่จนลืมใช้จิตสำนึก เหตุผลและความเป็นจริงในการกลั่นกรองว่าสิ่งที่เราทำมันดีหริอเลว ส่งผลกระทบต่อตัวเราหรือบุคคลอื่นหรือไม่ เรากลับทำมันเหมือนเป็นธรรมชาติหรือโดยจิตไร้สำนึกเราเองไปโดยอัตโนมัติ

Cotton Bud ก็คือสิ่งที่ถูกมนุษย์สร้างขึ้นมาให้เป็นเครื่องมือเพื่อใช้ประโยชน์อะไรบางอย่าง เราให้ความหมายให้คุณค่า เราพลิกแพลงดัดแปลงมันเอาไว้ใช้ในด้านต่าง ๆแต่เราก็กลับลืมถามตัวเองว่าเราได้เห็นแก่นแท้และโยชน์จากสิ่งนี้จริง ๆ รึปล่าว หรือเราแค่ลุ่มหลงไปกับมันโดยปราศจากการใช้เหตุผลและความเป็นจริงในการคิด เราเดินหน้ากันไปโดยไม่ได้มองดูรอบข้างรึปล่าว และสิ่งที่เราเชื่อมาแต่ก่อนมันทำลายทำร้ายตัวเราหรือบุคคลอื่นและสิ่งมีมีชีวิตอื่นหรือ ปล่าว Cotton bud ไม่ได้มีหัวไม่ได้มีท้าย แต่มันเป็นแค่วัสดุชนิดหนึ่งที่มนุษย์คนหนึ่งสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อให้เรานำมันมาใช้ประโยชน์อยู่ที่ว่าเราจะนำมันไปใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการสร้างสรรค์ทำสิ่งต่าง ๆในด้านบวกเพื่อความเป็นประโยชน์และพัฒนา หรือนำมันไปใช้ในด้านลบเพื่อเป็นเครื่องมือในการทำร้ายตัวเองหรือบุคคลอื่น ความเชื่อของมนุษย์ก็เช่นเดียวกัน Idolatory

Cotton buds (British English),are generally 7.5 cm in length and each end are wrapped with cotton. They were first invented in 1920 by Leo Gerstenzang and were used for cleaning in areas that were difficult to reach with conventional cleaning tools at the time and continue to be used today. What made cotton buds popular and recognised worldwide was its use for inserting into the ear holes to clean ear waxes as it is widely believed that ear waxes are not hygienic. However, in actual fact, ear waxes are useful for protecting the inner layers of the ear from bacterial infection and tiny insects that may go inside the ear.

In many countries, cotton buds are designed and manufactured in various forms and colours to attract consumers to use in many countries, cotton buds are designed and manufactured in various forms and colours to attract consumers to use them as advertised. Many consumers use them without considering and being aware of the consequences that may come from inserting these sticks into the ears. In closer speculation of some cotton buds packaging, many companies actually warn consumers NOT to insert them into the ears, yet people still do it because they believe in the benefits.

Statistics between 1990 until 2010 has shown that United States of America alone had seen more than 263,000 cases of child-related incidents that involved the use of cotton buds in the ears. This figure continues to rise consistently across the world as well. When cleaning the ears, not only would some ear waxes be unnecessarily removed from the ears, but some may also be pushed further into the ears that may cause friction or damage to the inner layers or worse, inflammation and infections.

Regarding people’s beliefs and faiths, many of them were constructed and originated by humans since ancient time. Perhaps beliefs were created and shared through fear or the need to collectively believe in shared values in order to cohabit as a community. These beliefs may evolve over time, whether positively or negatively. Some beliefs were advertised and adopted by big number of the population, so much so that one may forget to use reasonings and facts in filtering what should be followed and practiced, and what should not.

Just like many beliefs, cotton buds were created by humans and were given values and benefits as a tool to achieve something bigger. Sometimes it is easy to just believe in such benefits and forget to question whether there is a truth behind these claimed benefits or are we simply blindly believing without using our judgements. Are we allowing our faiths and beliefs to guide us to move forward without using reasons? Cotton buds neither has heads nor tails, they simply are materials that are put together by a person to be used as a tool in everyday life. It is up to us to make our own judgments and decide for ourselves whether we will use them for their benefits or allowing them to cause damage to ourselves and others.
