แนวความคิด
“ความพร่ามัวที่ชิดใกล้” เป็นคำที่นักปรัชญาชาวอิตาเลียนนามจิออร์จิโอ อกัมเบนใช้บรรยายด้านกลับของภาวะสมัยใหม่ ซึ่งศิลปินร่วมสมัยอย่างแท้จริงเท่านั้นจึงจะแลเห็น ศิลปินในโลกสมัยใหม่เหล่านี้ไม่ได้เพ่งมองแสงสว่างแห่งศตวรรษใหม่ แต่กลับมุ่งพิจารณาเงามืดของความรุ่งโรจน์

ผลงานของศิลปินลาวทั้ง 5 คนในนิทรรศการนี้ชี้ชวนให้เราพิจารณา “เงา” ดังกล่าวอย่างใกล้ชิด โดยเฉพาะในบริบทประวัติศาสตร์ของการต่อสู้ฝ่าฟันสู่ความเป็นสมัยใหม่ของลาว (ดังในคำภาษาลาวที่ว่า “ทันสมัย” หรือการตามให้ทันห้วงเวลาของปัจจุบันขณะ) ภาพการ์ตูนลายเส้นของอานูโลม สุวันดวนให้ภาพร่างของสังคมลาวภายใต้เงื้อมเงาของจักรวรรดินิยมอเมริกาในช่วงทศวรรษที่ 1970 ด้วยน้ำเสียงยั่วล้อเสียดสี ขณะที่ภาพเขียนของกงพัด หลวงลาดหวนย้อนกลับไปเล่าฉากชีวิตในเขตปลดปล่อยตลอดจนผลพวงสงครามและการปฏิวัติ ภาพเขียนของมาย
จันดาวงนำเสนอภาพอุดมคติของผู้หญิงและภูมิทัศน์ชนบทเพื่อตอบสนองอารมณ์โหยหาอดีตในโลกยุคใหม่ ขณะงานของศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ก็พบว่าอดีตยังคงทอดเงาอยู่บนวิถีการสร้างสรรค์ศิลปะของพวกเขา ดังปรากฏชัดในภาพถ่ายของบุญโปน โพทิสานที่บันทึกภาพซากปรักสงครามจากการทิ้งระเบิดของสหรัฐอเมริการะหว่างปีค.ศ. 1964-1973 และสารคดีของไซสงคาม อินดวงจันทีซึ่งนำเสนอความทรงจำทางโสตสัมผัสของการขับลำในราชสำนักหลวงพระบาง เมื่อพิจารณาในภาพรวมแล้ว ผลงานศิลปะเหล่านี้ได้ประกอบกันขึ้นเป็นจดหมายเหตุของประวัติศาสตร์สังคมลาวที่ชักชวนให้ผู้ชมสนใจประสบการณ์ผ่านพบจากอดีตและร่องรอยอันเลือนลางของอดีตในปัจจุบัน

Concept
An “intimate obscurity” is a word the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben uses to describe the flip side of modernity discerned by the genuine contemporary. Artists in the contemporary world, according to Agamben, see not the lights of the new century but the shadows of its glory.

Artworks by all five Lao artists featured in this exhibition offer an intimate look at such shadows in the course of the country’s struggles to become modern (than samai or “keeping up with the present time” in a Lao expression). Anoulom Souwandouane’s hand-drawn comics provide a satirical sketch of Lao society under American imperialism in the early 1970s, while Kongphat Luangrath’s paintings retrospectively depict lives in the liberated zone and the consequences of war and revolution. In between, May Chandavong’s paintings portray an idealized version of Lao femininity and landscape as a response to modern-day nostalgia. For the younger generation of Lao artists, the historical past continues to cast a shadow over their artistic practices, as evident in Bounpaul Photyzan’s photographic mediation of war debris in the wake of the U.S. bombing from 1964-1973 and Xaisongkham Induangchanthy’s documentation of aural memories of Luang Prabang court performance. Together, these artworks constitute an archive of Lao social history that brings our attention to the lived experience of the past and its spectral trace in the presen t.
