Brownstone Studios

Next Friday, December 12 is the opening of Saul Aaron Appelbaum's first solo exhibition in Bangkok. It will take place at Brownstone Studios (music rehearsal studio, concert space and art gallery at On Nut). The 37-year-old American artist and professor of architecture at Chulalongkorn University will make the gallery come to life with a work of scenography, that will stay up until January 17.

'Interiority | ชั้น เพดาน และ ผนัง' (floors, ceilings and walls) is an attempt for him to incorporate his abstract paintings-and layers of paintings, on plastic and fabric-into a gallery space. That space will be transformed into an interior piece of its own. Some paintings will be hanging, others will become part of the walls… thereby challenging notions of space and boundary.

I've attached some more information and pictures (of details of artworks). More pictures (of the transformed gallery) will be sent to you after the opening night, to which you are all invited. There will also be a concert in Brownstone's garden.

About Brownstone Studios
Opened about a year ago, Brownstone Studios has become one of the main platforms for creativity and expression in Bangkok. Musicians come to rehearse, record their music or host live concerts in the garden. Some regularly visit the musicians there for music lessons. Graffiti artists paint on the exterior walls. Curators organize exhibitions monthly, to support and promote both emerging and well established artists, on the inside walls.

Address
1395 Sukhumvit 77 - On Nut
(Between soi 23 and 25)
Opposite Siam Commercial Bank

About Saul Aaron Appelbaum

  • He was trained to be both an artist and architect.
  • He is 37 years old and American.
  • He is the founder of the Vera Maurina Press Studio, named after a great piano teacher.
  • Undeniably abstract.
  • Undeniably inspired by Simon Hantaï's folding technique.
  • Although he has been experimenting with techniques of paint, texture, volume layering and juxtaposition for a very long time, his thinking process is still in process and he continues producing works that are
  • completely different from what they were the year before.
  • Since he arrived in Bangkok about a year ago, he has been part of and included his students in many collaborative artistic projects. Recently he decorated a collector's home (Arthur Napolitano's) and
  • participated in a group exhibition with James Dean Company and Note Kritsada at Groove at Central World.
  • He will also be showing new works at the re-opening of Emporium shopping mall, very soon.

Some of his words (his exhibition statement is also attached in the email) :

"I'm interested in the way art invites itself into people's lifestyles."

"I first saw Hantaï's work in the late nineties, at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio in an exhibit called 'As Painting'. The folding technique I'm practicing started happening around 2010-2011. A lot of the artists I've seen painting with folds completely flatten their works after the process. I'm interested in how the fold directs the flow of the paint, with gravity. A lot of three-dimensional softwares that I'm using, ways of modeling are applied to physical experiments. It's the idea of a vector point or a control point, on a sculpted surface that you pull at a certain point or edge of the surface. That pull sends a "ripple" effect to the entire geometry of the surface."
