นิทรรศการ SAWATIKA

นิทรรศการเดี่ยว SAWATIKA ผลงานโดย Maja Hürst จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 5 เมษายน - 20 พฤษภาคม 2557 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันที่ 5 เมษายน 2557 เวลา 19.00 น. ณ Toot Yung Art Center

หลังจากความสำเร็จจากงานมหกรรมสตรีทอาร์ต “บุกรุก” ที่กรุงเทพมหานครในปี 2013 ซึ่ง Maja Hürst (TIKA) เป็นตัวแทนจากประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ และสร้างสรรค์ภาพฝาผนังขนาดใหญ่บนต้นเสาด้านหน้า BACC ศูนย์ศิลปะตูดยุงยินดีนำเสนอการจัดแสดงผลงานเดี่ยวครั้งแรกในเอเชียของของ Maja ซึ่งได้รับเชิญมาพำนักที่ศูนย์ศิลปะตั้งแต่เดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2014 โดยในระหว่างนี้ ศิลปินพัฒนาผลงานอย่างหลากหลาย ตั้งแต่เทคนิค pyrographed woodcut collages ไปจนถึง spray behind-glass-paintings และ mixed media on canvas ชิ้นงานของศิลปินที่สวยงาม ผสมผสานและเล่นกลกับนัยสำคัญใน ประเด็นหลากหลายเช่น ชีวิตประจำวัน มลภาวะ ความไม่จีรังยังยืน เรื่องเล่าปรัมปรา ตำนาน วรรณคดี และความรัก เป็นภาพรวมที่ดูสดชื่นของพลังงานและจินตนาการที่ทรงพลัง ซึ่ง Maja Hürst จะแสดงที่แกลเลอรี่ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 5 เมษายน ถึง 10 พฤษภาคม 2014 และที่บูติกจะนำเสนอคอลเลคชั่นจำนวนจำกัดของเสื้อที่พิมพ์ด้วยเทคนิค woodcut; สร้างขึ้นด้วยความร่วมมือของสถาปนิกชาวสวิส Thomas Meyer / AIM ซึ่งได้ตัดเสื้อเป็นแบบ unisex ด้วยผ้าลินิน และผ้าฝ้าย เคลือบด้วยภาพของ TIKA

จินตนาการของ Maja Hürst เป็นดั่งปาฐกถาของแง่มุมของสังคมโลกาภิวัตน์ในปัจจุบันกับวัฒนธรรมและเรื่องเล่าจากอดีตที่กำลังเลือนหาย วิถีชีวิตที่ถูกกำหนดอย่างตายตัวในเมืองใหญ่อันทันสมัยได้ถูกกระตุ้นลงในรูปทรงกราฟิกบนแนวตารางตรงๆ เติมด้วยพื้นผิววัสดุอย่างดิบๆ และลายขีดข่วนผ่านชั้นของฝุ่น สี และประวัติศาสตร์ เตือนให้นึกถึงความเก่าเก็บแบบ tropicalism. ภาพอันเป็นนามธรรมของมนุษย์ผสมสานกับสัตว์และวัตถุ เพื่อให้ชีวิตวันต่อวันของเราแข่งขันต่อสู้กับมรดกในความเป็นมนุษย์ของเรื่องเล่าปรัมปราและสัญลักษณ์ต่างๆ

ปัจจุบันศิลปินผู้เรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองผู้นี้พำนักอยู่ที่เบอร์ลิน ริโอ เดอ จาเนโร และซูริช เธอเกิดที่ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ในปี 1978 และเติบโตในกรุงไคโร และโคโลญ ผลงานแรกของเธอออกสู่ท้องถนนครั้งแรกในปี 1988 และเธอได้เริ่มทำงานกราฟฟิตีในช่วงปลายทศวรรษที่ 90s เธอสำเร็จการศึกษาและได้รับเกียรติ นิยมจาก ZHdk ในสาขา Visual Communication ในปี 2004 และฝางรากในวัฒนธรรม D.I.Y. เธอมีสตูดิโอกับเพื่อนๆ ที่ซึ่งเธอโฟกัสที่เทคนิคทำมืออย่าง woodcut หรือ linocut, silkscreen และ stencils (การฉลุ) เธอทำงานบนใบปลิว โปสเตอร์ และภาพประกอบเป็นหลักให้ปาร์ตี้ที่ซูริช ฉากสเก็ตบอร์ด และด้วยความหลงไหลของศิลปินที่มีต่อเพลงฮิปฮอปและแดนซ์ฮอล ทำให้เธอเริ่มการเป็นดีเจ ภายใต้ชื่อ Chiri Moya. ตั้งแต่ปี 2003 เธอทำงานอย่างเต็มเวลาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทัศนศิลป์ TIKA ซึ่งมีภาพศิลปะบนฝาผนังอาคารขนาด ใหญ่ ทั้งในเมืองเคปทาวน์ โคโลญ แอตแลนตา โซเฟีย กรุงเทพฯ แกมเบีย ริโอ เดอ จาเนโร อิสตันบูล เบอร์ลิน อเล็กซานเดรีย ซูริช และอื่นๆ เธอได้ถูกเชิญเข้าร่วมมหกรรมศิลปะ โปรเจค และการแสดงกลุ่มจำนวนมาก เช่นที่ Kunsthaus Zurich, สภาบัน Goethe ที่อเล็กซานเดรีย, Living Walls Conference ที่ แอตแลนตา, Cityleaks Festival ที่โคโลญ, มหกรรมศิลปะที่โคเปนเฮเกน และเทศกาล Museumsnacht

Ater the success of BUKRUK, street art festival in Bangkok in 2013, in which Maja Hürst (TIKA) represented Switzerland and produced a large scale mural on the front poles of the BACC, The Toot Yung Art Center is pleased to present the artist’s personal exhibition for the first time in Asia. Maja Hürst was invited for a residence at the art center from February to April 2014, during which she developed various works from phyrographed woodcuts, to spray behind-glass-paintings and mixed media on canvas. The rich, eclectic and generous body of work of the artist, juggling with themes such as daily life, pollution, ephemerality, folklore, mythology and love, is a refreshing overview of the powerful imagination and energy which Maja Hürst will display at the gallery from April 5th to May 10th 2014. In the boutique will be presented a limited collection of woodcut printed shirts; made in collaboration with Swiss architect Thomas Meyer / AIM who developed unisex cuts in linen and fine cotton coated with the dynamic forms of TIKA.

Maja Hürst’s imagery is a discourse of aspects of today’s global society and the nearly forgotten traditions and sagas of the past. The strictly regulated way of living in modern megacities is catalyzed into reduced graphic shapes on grid precision, filled with savagely applied textures and scratches through layers of dust, paint and history reminding of wild vintage tropicalism. Abstract human figures interweave with animals and objects to let our day to day life joust with our human heritage of tales and symbols.

The self taught artist is currently based between Berlin, Rio de Janeiro and Zurich. She was born in Switzerland in 1978 and raised in Cairo and Cologne. Maja Hürst pasted her first posters in the streets in 1988 and started painting graffiti in the late 90ies. She received her diploma with nomination at the Zürich University of the Arts in Visual Communication in 2004. Deeply rooted in d.i.y. culture she experimented with manual multiplying techniques like wood- or linocut, silkscreen print and stencils in which she produced countless posters for Zurich's hip-hop and squat scene. Since 2003 she is working full time on her visual universe TIKA which can be found as large scale building bracing murals in Cape Town, Cologne, Atlanta, The Gambia, Rio de Janeiro, Alexandria and Berlin to name a few. Maja Hürst has been invited to numerous festivals, projects and group shows for example at the Kunsthaus Zurich, Alexandria Goethe Institut, Living Walls Conference Atlanta, Cityleaks Festival Cologne, Copenhagen Art Festival or the Museumsquartier Vienna.
