แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ เปิดตัวนิทรรศการ "Whitewash / ชโลมขาว" โดยศิลปินหญิงคนสําคัญแห่งวงการศิลปะของเมืองไทย กัญญา เจริญศุภกุล จัดแสดงผลงานย้อนหลังที่ ได้รับการสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นตั้งแต่ช่วงทศวรรษ 2530 ซึ่งศิลปินได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากการสังเกต ปรากฏการณ์ทางสังคมและการเมือง ก่อนจะถ่ายทอดเป็นงานศิลปะแบบนามธรรมที่สื่อสารอารมณ์ความรู้สึก ผ่านทัศนธาตุหลากรูปแบบและสัญลักษณ์ที่สื่อความหมายเฉพาะตัว เชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมร่วมตั้งคําถามถึงความจริงที่ศิลปินจงใจซ่อนเร้นเอาไว้ภายใต้ความงามของภาพ

ผลงานส่วนใหญ่ที่นํามาจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการนี้ถูกสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นในช่วงครึ่งหลังของทศวรรษ 2530 เป็นต้นมา อันเปรียบเสมือนยุคสมัยแห่งการล่มสลายของสังคมไทยทั้งในทางเศรษฐกิจและการเมือง จากวิกฤตการณ์มากมายที่สร้างความวุ่นวายขึ้นในสังคม ข่าวสารที่ปรากฏอยู่บนหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์และโทรทัศน์ รวมไปถึงบรรยากาศของสังคมที่อบอวลไปด้วยกลิ่นอายของความระส่ําระสาย ได้สร้างความสะเทือนใจให้กับกัญญาเป็นอย่างมาก ถือเป็นช่วงเวลาที่สําคัญในการปรับเปลี่ยนแนวทางการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานที่มี ความเป็นจิตรกรรมมากขึ้น จากเดิมที่กัญญานิยมทํางานศิลปะภาพพิมพ์เป็นหลัก

ท่ามกลางการแสดงออกของทัศนธาตุอันหลากหลาย องค์ประกอบหลักอย่าง "สีขาว" คือสิ่งที่ ปรากฏให้เห็นได้อย่างชัดเจนมากที่สุด แม้จะมีสีสันมากมายกระจัดกระจายอยู่ในพื้นหลัง ทว่ากลับมีเพียงสี ขาวที่แสดงตัวออกมาเมื่อถูกมองแบบผิวเผิน ถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกสงบนิ่งและนุ่มนวลในภาพรวม ตรงกันข้ามอย่างสิ้นเชิงกับสาระอันรุนแรงของปรากฏการณ์อันเป็นบ่อเกิดแห่งแรงบันดาลใจ

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน

กัญญา เจริญศุภกุล เกิดปี 2490 ที่จังหวัดนครราชสีมา เริ่มศึกษาศิลปะที่โรงเรียนเพาะช่าง กรุงเทพมหานคร จนกระทั่งจบการศึกษาในปี 2508 จึงได้เข้าศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาตรี สาขาภาพพิมพ์ ที่คณะจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรมและภาพพิมพ์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร และศึกษาต่อที่สถาบันศิลปะแห่งชิคา โก (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois) รัฐอิลลินอยส์ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา จนจบการศึกษา ระดับปริญญาโท สาขาภาพพิมพ์ ในปี 2520

เมื่อสําเร็จการศึกษา กัญญาได้ทําหน้าที่เป็นอาจารย์สอนศิลปะประจําภาควิชาภาพพิมพ์ คณะ จิตรกรรมฯ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร โดยมีผลงานทางวิชาการที่สําคัญ คือ การรื้อฟื้นองค์ความรู้ของศิลปะ ภาพพิมพ์หิน (Lithography) นําไปสู่การจัดทําตําราสําหรับการเรียนการสอนวิชาศิลปะภาพพิมพ์หิน ซึ่งได้รับการบรรจุลงในหลักสูตรการศึกษาวิชาภาพพิมพ์ในสถาบันการศึกษาศิลปะหลายแห่งในประเทศไทยมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

กัญญาได้รับตําแหน่งทางวิชาการขั้นสูงสุด โดยได้รับการโปรดเกล้าฯ เป็นศาสตราจารย์เกียรติคุณ และได้รับการยกย่องเชิดชูปริญญาศิลปดุษฎีบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ สาขาวิชาทัศนศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ประจําปี 2560 แสดงให้เห็นถึงบทบาทของกัญญาในฐานะศิลปินผู้มีคุณูปการต่อวงการศิลปะและ การศึกษาศิลปะภาพพิมพ์ของไทย

ปัจจุบันกัญญายังคงสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะอย่างต่อเนื่อง และมีนิทรรศการแสดงผลงานศิลปะ เป็นระยะๆ ทั้งนิทรรศการเดี่ยวและนิทรรศการกลุ่ม นับได้ว่าเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินหญิงคนสําคัญที่มีบทบาทอย่างมากต่อวงการศิลปะของเมืองไทย

แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ คือพื้นที่ศิลปะ ณ ย่านเมืองเก่าใจกลางกรุงเทพมหานคร ก่อตั้งโดยคุณธวัชชัย สมคง บรรณาธิการบริหารนิตยสารไฟน์อาร์ท ในปี 2563 เพื่อเป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อระหว่างผู้คนในโลกศิลปะ ไม่ ว่าจะเป็นศิลปิน ภัณฑารักษ์ นักสะสมงานศิลปะ นักศึกษา หรือผู้รักงานศิลปะ ภายในกลุ่มอาคารสามหลัง ย่านถนนหลานหลวง พื้นที่ใช้สอยอันหลากหลายตั้งแต่คาเฟ่ สตูดิโอ ห้องประชุมอเนกประสงค์ ห้องทํางาน ส่วนรวม ไปจนถึงห้องพัก เปิดโอกาสให้ทุกคนได้เข้ามาใช้เวลาร่วมกันเพื่อสร้างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ หรือแม้แต่

นอกจากผลงานศิลปะที่สอดแทรกอยู่ในทุกซอกทุกมุมของพื้นที่ที่ได้รับการออกแบบมาเป็นอย่างดีผ่านสายตาของภัณฑารักษ์ ภายในอาณาบริเวณของแมตดอทยังประกอบไปด้วยห้องแสดงนิทรรศการสองแห่ง ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการนําเสนอศิลปินไทยและศิลปินนานาชาติให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยน เรียนรู้อย่างกว้างขวาง ได้แก่ Blacklist Gallery สําหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียนโดยศิลปินที่ได้รับเชิญให้เข้า มาทํางานร่วมกับเรา และ Matdot Gallery สําหรับแสดงผลงานของศิลปินในพํานัก

MATDOTArt Center proudly presents "Whitewash," a captivating retrospective exhibition by renowned Thai artist Kanya Charoensupkul.This showcase features a collection of works created since the 1990s, inspired by the artist's keen observations of social and political phenomena. Kanyamasterfully translates these observations into abstract art, employing a rich tapestry of visual elements and evocative symbols to convey a range of emotions and invite viewers to delve into the underlying truths concealed beneath the aesthetic beauty of the artworks.

The majority of the artworks showcased in this exhibition were created during the latter half of the 1990s, a period marked by Thailand's socio-political and economic disintegration.The incessant barrage of news from newspapers and television, coupled with the pervasive atmosphere of societal unrest, deeply affected Kanya. This period marked a significant shift in her creative approach, as she transitioned from her primary focus on printmaking to a more painterly style.

Amidst the diverse interplay of visual elements, one stands out with striking clarity: the pervasive presence of "white." Despite the riot of coloursscattered across the background, it is white that asserts its dominance upon initial glance. It imparts a sense of tranquillityand gentleness to the overall composition, standing in stark contrast to the underlying intensity ofthe events that served as inspiration.

"Whitewash" is open for viewing free of charge from 4 Juneto 7 July2024, at Matdot Gallery, MATDOT Art Center, Lan Luang Road, Pom Prap Sattru Phai District, Bangkok. The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 4June2024 at 18:00.

About Artist

Born in Nakhon Ratchasima in 1947, Kanya Charoensupkulembarked on her artistic journey at the renowned Poh-Chang School in Bangkok. Upon graduating in 1965, she pursued her passion further by enrolling in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Printmaking at Silpakorn University. Her thirst for knowledge led her to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking in 1977.

Upon returning to Thailand, Kanya dedicated herself to nurturing the next generation of artists as a professor in the Printmaking Department at Silpakorn University. Her significant contribution to the field of printmaking education lies in her meticulous revival and documentation of lithography techniques, culminating in a comprehensive textbook that has become an indispensable resource in art education institutions across Thailand.

Kanya's exceptional achievements were recognized when she was bestowed with the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus in 2017. In the same year, Silpakorn University conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts, a testament to her profound impact on Thai art and printmaking education.

Even today, Kanya continues to grace the art world with her creative spirit, regularly showcasing her works in both solo and group exhibitions. Her unwavering dedication and artistic excellence have solidified her position as one of Thailand's most prominent and influential female artists.

About MATDOT

MATDOT Art Centeris a unique art space situated in the heart of Bangkok Old Town founded in 2020by Tawatchai Somkong, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Magazine. It is intended to garner a connection with the art community from artists to curators, collectors, students, and aficionados alike. Contained within three buildings are a cafe, a studio, a meeting room, a co-working space, and even an accommodation quarter that is open to everyone. It is a space for people to gather and create, but is not limited to just the local community, it extends to the international community as well.
