แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ นําเสนอนิทรรศการศิลปะจัดวางอันน่าประทับใจ โดยศิลปินชาวสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ลิเลียน ซูมเคมิ ซึ่งได้เข้าร่วมโครงการศิลปินในพํานักที่แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ เป็นเวลาสามเดือน ระหว่างปี 2566–2567 นิทรรศการนี้ได้รับการคัดสรรโดยสรณ วิริยะประสิทธิ์บรรณาธิการและภัณฑารักษ์ของแมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์และได้รับการสนับสนุนโดยสถานเอกอัครราชทูตสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ประจําประเทศไทย

สําหรับผลงานชิ้นนี้ ศิลปินได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากเรื่องราวการสูญพันธุ์ของปลาหวีเกศ หรือชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Platytropius Siamensis ซึ่งเป็นปลาน้ำจืดที่เคยพบได้ทั่วไปในแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เขตที่ราบลุ่มภาคกลางของประเทศไทย แต่หลักฐานทางชีววิทยาที่หลงเหลืออยู่ในปัจจุบันกลับมีน้อยมาก ไม่เคยมีใครได้พบเห็นตัวเป็นๆ ของมันมาตั้งแต่ปลายทศวรรษ 2510 และผู้คนรุ่นใหม่ก็แทบไม่มีใครรู้จักชื่อของปลาชนิดนี้อีกแล้ว การที่ตลอดเวลากว่าครึ่งศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา ปลาหวีเกศได้เลือนหายไปจากความทรงจําของผู้คน ถือเป็นโศกนาฏกรรมที่น่าเศร้ายิ่งกว่าการสูญพันธุ์ไปจากธรรมชาติ

การสํารวจวิจัยเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับปลาชนิดนี้และการทํางานร่วมกับกลุ่มคนท้องถิ่นที่หลากหลาย เกิดผลลัพธ์เป็นงานศิลปะจัดวางที่ประกอบไปด้วยประติมากรรมดินเผารูปปลาหลายร้อยตัว ที่ถูกร้อยเรียงแบบกลับหัวเข้าด้วยกันเป็นเส้นยาวหลายๆ เส้น จนเกิดเป็นโมบายกระดิ่งลมขนาดใหญ่ที่ผู้ชมสามารถก้าวเข้าไปอยู่ด้านใน เมื่อปบาดินเผาแต่ละตัวเคลืäอนไหวมาสัมผัสกัน จะมีเสียงดังกังวานเป็นท่วงทํานองก้องไปทั่วห้องนิทรรศการ

“ตลอดระยะเวลาสามเดือนของการเป็นศิลปินพํานักในกรุงเทพฯ ฉันได้สํารวจเรื่องราวท้องถิ่นในรูปแบบของรูปและเสียง มันเป็นเรื่องราวที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพวกเราทุกคน นั่นคือการสูญพันธุ์ของสัตว์บางสายพันธุ์ตลอดจนประสบการณ์ในการเชื่อมต่อกับพวกมัน” ซูมเคมิกล่าวถึงการทํางานศิลปะชุดนี้ “Still Alive เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของโครงการศิลปะที่กําลังดําเนินอยู่ ภายใต้แนวคิดของการสร้างบทสนทนากับสิ่งมีชีวิตที่สูญพันธุ์ในรูปแบบของภาพและเสียง”

นิทรรศการ Still Alive โดย ลิเลียน ซูมเคมิ เปิดให้เข้าชมโดยไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย ตั้งแต่วันที่ 5–24 มีนาคม 2567 ณ แบล็คลิสต์แกลเลอรี, แมทดอตอาร์ต เซนเตอร์ ถนนหลานหลวง เขตป้อมปราบศัตรูพ่าย กรุงเทพฯ โดยจะมีพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการในวันจันทร์ที่ 4 มีนาคม 2567 เวลา 18.00 น.

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน
ลิเลียน ซูมเคมิ เกิดและเติบโตเขตเทือกเขาสวิสแอลป์ จบการศึกษาจาก Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Art ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ บรรพบุรุษของเธอเป็นชนเผ่าเร่ร่อนบนเทือกเขาสูง เธอนิยามตนเองเป็นศิลปินและนักวิจัยเชิงทัศนศิลป์

เธอมีความสนใจทํางานร่วมกับชุมชนท้องถิ่น และมักคอยมองหาโอกาสทีäจะได้สร้างสรรค์ภาพ สถานการณ์ หรืองานจัดวางที่สามารถก่อให้เกิดการเชื่อมต่อ แนวความคิด หรือคําถามใหม่ๆ ในการรับรู้ของผู้ชม ผลงานของเธอได้รับการคัดเลือกจัดแสดงในโครงการศิลปกรรมแบรนด์นิว ครั้งที่ 1 (2546) ณ Si-Am Art Space กรุงเทพฯ, New Territories (2549), Scotland's International festival of live Arts เมืองกลาสโกลว์, Busan Biennale (2551) ประเทศเกาหลีใต้, Womanifesto: Flowing Connections (2566) ณ หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร และอีกมากกว่าห้าสิบนิทรรศการในเอเชีย ยุโรป ออสเตรเลีย และอเมริกาเหนือ ซึäงได้รับการบันทึกเอาไว้เป็นส่วนหนึäงของฐานข้อมูลศิลปะในสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ (sikart.ch) และ Asia Art Archive (aaa.org.hk) ในประเทศจีน

ปัจจุบัน ลิเลียนพํานักและทํางานในพื้นที่พักอาศัยสําหรับสตูดิโอการทํางานร่วมกันของศิลปินในเมืองเบเซิล และบ้านหลังเล็กๆ ที่ความสูง 1,665 เมตร จากระดับน้ำทะเลปานกลาง ติดตามผลงานของลิเลียนได้ที่อินสตาแกรม @Zumkemi_Liliane

เกี่ยวกับภัณฑารักษ์
สรณ วิริยะประสิทธิ์ เกิดปี 2535 จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี จากคณะโบราณคดี มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ในปี 2557 ด้วยความสนใจเฉพาะตัวด้านประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและศิลปะร่วมสมัย ทําให้เขาสมัครเข้าทํางานในตําแหน่งนักเขียนประจํากองบรรณาธิการ นิตยสารไฟน์อาร์ท ประเทศไทย นอกจากบทความด้านศิลปวิจารณ์ที่ตีพิมพ์อย่างต่อเนื่องระหว่างปี 2559–2566 สรณยังมีงานเขียนเกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและสูจิบัตรนิทรรศการศิลปะในประเทศไทยอีกหลายเล่ม

ประสบการณ์ที่ได้รับจากการทํางานร่วมกับศิลปินและบุคลากรในวงการศิลปะ ตลอดจนการเข้าชมนิทรรศการศิลปะทั้งในประเทศไทยและต่างประเทศ ส่งผลให้เขาได้พัฒนาทักษะด้านสุนทรียศาสตร์และความเข้าใจในงานศิลปะร่วมสมัย ในปี 2562 เขารับตําแหน่งผู้ช่วยภัณฑารักษ์ให้กับนิทรรศการ ‘โลกยังคงหมุนไป’ ที่ศาลาไทยในมหกรรมศิลปะนานาชาติ เวนิส เบียนนาเล ครั้งที่ 58 และภัณฑารักษ์ร่วมในนิทรรศการสําหรับพาวิลเลียนนานาชาติพิมานทิพย์ ในการแสดงศิลปกรรมร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ ไทยแลนด์ เบียนนาเล โคราช 2021 ต่อมาในปี 2566 เขาได้มีโอกาสคัดสรรนิทรรศการชุดแรกของตัวเอง ในชื่อ ‘Constructive Interference’ จัดแสดงผลงานของศิลปินไทยและต่างชาติจํานวนสามคนที่แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ กรุงเทพฯ นอกจากการทํางานในตําแหน่งบรรณาธิการ ปัจจุบันเขาดํารงตําแหน่งบรรณาธิการและภัณฑารักษ์ที่แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์

แมตดอท อาร์ต เซนเตอร์คือพื้นที่ศิลปะ ณ ย่านเมืองเก่าใจกลางกรุงเทพมหานคร ก่อตั้งโดยคุณธวัชชัย สมคง บรรณาธิการบริหารนิตยสารไฟน์อาร์ท ในปี 2563เพืäอเป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อระหว่างผู้คนในโลกศิลปะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นศิลปิน ภัณฑารักษ์ นักสะสมงานศิลปะ นักศึกษา หรือผู้รักงานศิลปะ ภายในกลุ่มอาคารสามหลังย่านถนนหลานหลวง พื้นที่ใช้สอยอันหลากหลายตั งแต่คาเฟ่ สตูดิโอ ห้องประชุมอเนกประสงค์ ห้องทํางานส่วนรวม ไปจนถึงห้องพัก เปิดโอกาสให้ทุกคนได้เข้ามาใช้เวลาร่วมกันเพื่อสร้ างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ หรือแม้แต่การขยายความร่วมมือไปยังชุมชนภายนอกทั้งในไทยและต่างประเทศ

นอกจากผลงานศิลปะที่สอดแทรกอยู่ในทุกซอกทุกมุมของพื้นที่ที่ได้รับการออกแบบมาเป็นอย่างดีผ่านสายตาของภัณฑารักษ์ ภายในอาณาบริเวณของแมตดอทยังประกอบไปด้วยห้องแสดงนิทรรศการสองแห่ง ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการนําเสนอศิลปินไทยและศิลปินนานาชาติให้เกิดการแลกเปลีäยนเรียนรู้อย่างกว้างขวาง ได้แก่ Blacklist Gallery สําหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียนโดยศิลปินทีäได้รับเชิญให้เข้ามาทํางานร่วมกับเรา และ Matdot Gallery สําหรับแสดงผลงานของศิลปินในพํานัก

MATDOTArt Center presents an impressive art exhibition “Still Alive” by the Swiss artist Liliane Zumkemi.The artist participated in the artist-in-residence program at MATDOTfor three months between 2023–2024.This exhibition is curated by Sarana Wiriyaprasit, editor-in-chief and curator of MATDOT Art Center, and supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Thailand.

The artist drew inspiration from the extinct “Pla Wee Ket,” scientifically known as Platytropius Siamensis. This freshwater fish was once commonly found in the Chao Phraya River basin in central Thailand, but current biological evidence is scarce. No one has reported sightings since the late 1970s, and the younger generation is almost unfamiliar with its name. For over half a century, this fishhas faded from people's memories, becoming a tragic loss more profound than its natural extinction.

Research into the story of this extinctionand collaboration with diverse local communities resulted in an art installation consisting of ceramic fish hung upside down on a thread. They form a cylindrical space with an entrance that invites the audience to enter.The numerous ceramic parts resound as they move and touch each other. They play a melody.

“For my 3-month artist-in-residence in Bangkok, I explored a local topic in an audiovisual way. A topic that concerns us all: the extinction of species and at the same time an experience of being able to get in touch with an extinct species.” Zumkemi explainedabout this art installation. “This is an ongoing art project emphasizing on the dialogue with extinct species in audio visual way.”

“Still Alive” is open for viewing free of charge from 27 to 24 March2024, at MATDOT Gallery, MATDOT Art Center, Lan Luang Road, Pom Prap Sattru Phai District, Bangkok. The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 27Februaryat 18:00.

About Artist
Liliane Zumkemi was born in the Swiss Alps. She graduated from Lucerne Universityof Applied Sciences and Art in Switzerland. Her ancestors were Alpine nomads,and she sees herself as an artist/visual researcher.She’s interested in collaborative works with local communities.

She’s curious about creating images/ situations/ installations that will cause new connections/thoughts/questions in the audience’s mind. Her works have been selected for the first Edition of Brand New (2003) at Si-Am Art Space in Bangkok, New Territories (2006), Scotland’s international festival of live Arts in Glasgow, the Busan Biennale (2008) in Korea or for Womanifesto: Flowing Connections (2023) at Bangkok Art and Culture Center to name afew. Her more than 50 exhibitions in Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America are documented in lexicon on art in Switzerland (sikart.ch) and Asia Art Archive (aaa.org.hk) in China.

About Curator
Sarana Wiriyaprasit, born in 1992, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Archaeology at Silpakorn University in 2014. His personal passion for art history and contemporary art prompted him to pursue a position as a writer at Fine Art Magazine, Thailand. Since 2016, Sarana has contributed art criticism to Fine Art Magazine and ART SQUARE magazine. He has also co-written and edited various art books, including catalogues for numerous art exhibitions.

Through several years of interactions with artists and art enthusiasts, as well as attending art exhibitions both in Thailand and internationally, Sarana has developed a broad visual aesthetic and profound insights into the arts. In 2019, he worked as a curatorial assistant for the Thai Pavilion at the 58thVenice Biennale in Italy. In 2021, he served as a co-curator for the Pimarntip International Pavilion at the2ndThailand Biennale in Korat. In 2023, Sarana curated his debut exhibition, ‘Constructive Interference,’ featuring three Thai and international artists, at MATDOT Art Center, Bangkok. His career trajectory as a writer, curator, as well as art enthusiast continues to flourish. Currently, he is the editor-in-chief and curator at MATDOT Art Center.

About MATDOT Art Center
MATDOT Art Centeris a unique art space situated in the heart of Bangkok Old Town founded in 2020 by Tawatchai Somkong, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Magazine. It is intended to garner a connection with the art community from artists to curators, collectors, students, and aficionados alike. Contained within three buildings are a cafe, a studio, a meeting room, a co-working space, and even an accommodation quarter that is open to everyone. It is a space for people to gather and create, but is not limited to just the local community, it extends to the international community as well.
