Gallery VER is proud to present The Temple of Venus and Cosmic Serpent, a solo exhibition by Yujin Lee.

The earth is a dancing serpent.
Every breath is a reconfiguration.
Every move is a prophecy.
The head bites the tail and it swivels
Like the changing seasons.
Only until…

The Temple of Venus and Cosmic Serpent hosts totemic images, sounds, objects, and movements built upon a site-specific installation laid out in four colors–black, white, green, and red. Its fissures and portals carry stories of repentance that allude to folk art, animism, shamanism, taoism, and buddhism. The Temple is conceived out of an indicative circumstance from two years ago, when the artist killed a snake on the day of her third anniversary of living on Jeju Island.

The island is a great teacher that inspires gathering, meditation, healing, humor, care, and magic to be shared amongst human and non-human life. Two emblematic practices of such a way of life on the island are I Ching and kintsugi, which are prominently featured in The Temple. Taken as both an everyday activity and a mystical artistry, they offer an auspicious method of treatment for the wounds inflicted upon ourselves and the world.

The Temple is open until the week of the spring equinox (March 20, 2024), a juncture when night and day are of equal length. Like the vulva that bleeds and heals–like the serpent’s ecdysis, enter The Temple, ready to shed the harmful parasites and bacteria, ready to breathe and dance for cosmic liberation, from the river to the sea.

On the 27th of January, a special durational performance will be hosted by the artist featuring a 7-track ambient album titled, Missing Accompaniments, to be released by Mystic Mammal, a musician based in South Korea. Starting at 17:00, the performance will last for 45 minutes, entailing 7 event scores to be enacted by the artist. During this one-night performance, the audience joins the artist in animating The Temple into a collective, multisensory experience. "วิหารแห่งดาวศุกร์และนาคาเอกภพ" เชิญชวนให้สัมผัสกับภาพสัญญะ เสียง สิ่งของ และการเคลื่อนไหวที่สร้างขึ้นศิลปะจัดวางทั้งสี่สี ดำ ขาว เขียว แดง รอยปริกะเทาะและซุ้มประตูเล่าเรื่องราวของการสำนึกผิด ที่พาดพิงศิลปะพื้นบ้าน วิญญาณนิยม ลัทธิการทรงเจ้า ลัทธิเต๋า และพุทธศาสนา "วิหาร" นี้ถือกำเนิดจากเหตุการณ์ลางบอกเหตุเมื่อ 2 ปีก่อน เมื่อศิลปินฆ่างูในวันครบรอบ 3 ปีของการมาอยู่อาศัยบนเกาะเชจู

เกาะแห่งนี้เปรียบเสมือนครูผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ บันดาลให้เกิดการรวมกลุ่ม, ทำสมาธิ, เยียวยา, ความขบขัน, การดูแล, และมนตรา ท่ามกลางทั้งมนุษย์และสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น สองศาสตร์ที่สะท้อนวิถีชีวิตเช่นนี้บนเกาะคือ อี้จิง คำภีร์แห่งการเปลี่ยนแปลง และ คินสึงกิ ซึ่งโดดเด่นในวิหารนี้ ทั้งการปฏิบัติประจำวันและศิลปะลี้ลับเหล่านี้ มอบหนทางเยียวยาอันเป็นมงคลแก่บาดแผลที่เราฝากไว้บนตัวตนและโลกใบนี้
วิหารนี้เปิดจนถึงสัปดาห์ของวิษุวัตของฤดูใบไม้ผลิ (20 มีนาคม 2024) ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาที่กลางวันและกลางคืนมีความยาวเท่ากัน เสมือนเลือดสตรีหลั่งไหลเและเยีวยา เฉกเช่นการลอกคราบของงู ก้าวเข้าสู่วิหารนี้ พร้อมที่จะกำจัดปรสิตร้ายและแบคทีเรีย พร้อมที่จะหายใจและเริงระบำเพื่อจะเป็นอิสระร่วมกัน จากแม่น้ำสู่ทะเล

ในวันที่ 27 มกราคม จะมีการแสดงพิเศษโดยศิลปิน พร้อมกับดนตรีโดยศิลปินเกาหลี Mystic Mammal ตั้งแต่ 17:00 น. โดนมีทั้งหมด 7 เพลง และใช้เวลาประมาณ​ 45 นาที ในระหว่างการแสดงครั้งเดียวนี้ ผู้ชมจะร่วมกับศิลปินในการปลุกชีวิตวิหารนี้ให้เกิดเป็นประสบการณ์ร่วมกัน ผ่านประสาทสัมผัสทั้งห้ากรุณาลงทะเบียนเพื่อรับข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับการแสดงด้านล่าง: https://forms.gle/yoWisvF1AHurqQoV9

지구는 춤추는 뱀.
숨으로 재배치하고,
움직임으로 예언한다.
머리가 꼬리를 물고 회전하면
계절의 변화가 일어난다.
하지만 언제까지…

<비너스와 우주뱀의 집>(이하 ‘집’)은 토템적 이미지, 소리, 오브제 및 움직임을 품고 있는데, 네 가지 색(검정, 흰색, 녹색, 빨간색)으로 구성된 장소 특정적 구조물에 배치되어 있다. 곳곳에 설치된 틈과 문 사이로 민속, 무속, 애니미즘, 도학(道學), 그리고 현문(玄門)을 다각적으로 암시하는 회개의 이야기가 흘러나온다. ‘집’은 2년 전, 작가가 제주도 섬생활 3주년을 맞는 날 뱀을 죽인 암시적인 사건에서 착안되었다.

다섯은 마법의 숫자다

섬은 위대한 스승이다. 인간과 비인간 존재가 함께 회합, 명상, 치유, 유희, 돌봄, 마법을 나눌 수 있는 곳이 바로 섬이기 때문이다. ‘집’에는 이와 같은 작가의 섬생활을 상징하는 두 가지 실천법인 ‘주역’과 ‘킨츠기’가 주요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 일상적 활동이자 신비로운 기예로 여겨지는 주역과 킨츠기에서 영감을 얻은 작품은 우리가 스스로와 세상에 가한 상처를 치유하는 상서로운 길을 열어준다.

‘집’은 밤과 낮의 길이가 같아지는 춘분 주간(2024년 3월 20일)까지 열려있다. 유혈과 자기치유의 상징인 음문(陰門)처럼, 뱀의 탈피처럼, 해로운 기생충과 박테리아를 떨쳐 버릴 준비가 되어 있다면, ‘집’으로 입장해, 강으로부터 바다에 이르기까지 우주적 해방을 위한 숨을 쉬고 춤을 추길 기원한다.

전시 개막일인 1월 27일, 작가는 특별한 퍼포먼스를 준비했다. 오후 5시에 시작해 약 45분간 진행되며, 한국을 기반으로 활동하는 뮤지션 Mystic Mammal의 발표 예정 앰비언트 앨범 속 7곡에 맞춰 7개의 지시문(event score)을 관객과 실행한다. 작가와 함께 기운생동하는 ‘집’을 경험하고 싶다면 프로필의 사전 예약 링크 참고: https://forms.gle/yoWisvF1AHurqQoV9
