แมทดอต อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ ร่วมฉลองโอกาสครบรอบ 80 ปี แห่งการเดินทางบนเส้นทางศิลปะของ กมล ทัศนาญชลี จะนำผู้ชมย้อนกลับไปยังช่วงเวลาก่อนที่กมลจะได้รับการขนานนามให้เป็น "ศิลปินสองซีกโลก" ในปี 2528 กมลใช้ทะเลทรายโมฮาวีเป็นเสมือนผืนผ้าใบภายใต้แผ่นฟ้ากว้าง จัดวางหลอดสีภาพพิมพ์สามมิติขนาดใหญ่เอาไว้ตามจุดต่างๆ ก่อนจะปล่อยให้กระแสลมตามธรรมชาติพัดพาผงสีกระจายตัวทอดยาวออกไปบนผืนทราย เกิดเป็นภาพอันน่าตื่นตาของเส้นสีสดใสบนภูมิทัศน์ของทะเลทรายอันเวิ้งว้าง

ปฏิบัติการดังกล่าวถือเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ "หลอดสี" อีกมากมายในเวลาต่อมา กระบวนการทดลองค้นหาความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ ของศิลปะภาพพิมพ์ นำมาสู่การพัฒนาทางเทคนิค จนเกิดเป็นงานศิลปะสื่อผสมหลากหลายรูปแบบ ส่วนในเชิงแนวความคิด กมลก็ได้นำเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับปรัชญาทางพุทธศาสนาที่ผูกโยงกับวิถีชีวิตและภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นของโลกตะวันออก มาผสมผสานกับองค์ความรู้และนวัตกรรมทางศิลปะร่วมสมัยจากโลกตะวันตก บอกเล่าผ่านผลงานศิลปะเชิงแนวความคิดได้อย่างชาญฉลาด

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน
กมล ทัศนาญชลีหนึ่งในศิลปินผู้บุกเบิกงานศิลปะสื่อผสมในยุคแรกเริ่มของประเทศไทย กมลสําเร็จการศึกษาอนุปริญญาจากโรงเรียนเพาะช่าง ก่อนจะได้รับทุนไปศึกษาต่อด้านศิลปะที่สถาบันศิลปะโอตีส นครลอสแอนเจลิส รัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา หลังจากสําเร็จการศึกษา กมลดํารงชีพด้วยการทํางานเป็นศิลปินอิสระ เขาถือเป็นศิลปินไทยคนแรกๆ ที่เริ่มทดลองสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะสื่อผสมที่ผสมผสานแนวคิดและปรัชญาของโลกตะวันออกกับโลกตะวันตกเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน ส่งผลให้เขากลายเป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างแพร่หลายในระดับสากล

กมลมีผลงานสําคัญ เช่น ผลงานศิลปะภูมิทัศน์ที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นกลางทะเลทรายในสหรัฐอเมริกา ระหว่างปี 2518–2521, ผลงานประติมากรรมสื่อผสม รอยพระพุทธบาท, หนังใหญ่ (Buddha Footprint, Nang-Yai Series) (2525) ซึ่งได้ถูกบันทึกไว้ในหนังสือประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะโลก Gardner’s Art Through the Ages (11th Edition) และผลงานชุด Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire & Water (2558) ที่ได้รับคัดเลือกไปจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการสําหรับศาลาไทย ในมหกรรมการแสดงศิลปะนานาชาติ เวนิส เบียนนาเล่ ครั้งที่ 56 (2558) ณ ประเทศอิตาลี

นอกจากการทํางานศิลปะอย่างต่อเนื่อง กมลยังได้รับเชิญเป็นอาจารย์พิเศษที่มหาวิทยาลัยแคลิฟอร์เนีย เบิร์คเลย์ ซานฟรานซิสโก (University of California, Berkeley) มหาวิทยาลัยแคลิฟอร์เนีย ลอสแอนเจลิ ส (University of California, Los Angeles) ตลอดจนเป็นวิทยากรรับเชิญให้กับสถาบันการศึกษาด้านศิลปะในประเทศไทยอีกหลายแห่ง

ตลอดระยะเวลากว่าหกทศวรรษในวงการศิลปะ กมลได้สร้างคุณประโยชน์ต่อสังคม ด้วยการสนับสนุนวงการศิลปะในประเทศไทย ภายใต้ความร่วมมือกับกรมส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรม และสํานักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม จัดทําโครงการส่งเสริมการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ ด้านศิลปะสําหรับเยาวชนมากมาย เช่น โครงการศิลปินแห่งชาติสัญจร โครงการรางวัลยุวศิลปินไทยโครงการครูศิลป์ โครงการพัฒนาศักยภาพศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ ฯลฯ หลายโครงการยังคงได้มีการดําเนินงานอย่างต่อเนืáองมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

ในปี 2540 กมลได้รับการยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติให้เป็นศิลปินแห่งชาติ สาขาทัศนศิลป์ (จิตรกรรมและสื่อผสม)

เกี่ยวกับแมทดอตอาร์ตเซนเตอร์
แมตดอท อาร์ต เซนเตอร์คือพื้นที่ศิลปะ ณ ย่านเมืองเก่าใจกลางกรุงเทพมหานคร ก่อตั้งโดยคุณธวัชชัย สมคง บรรณาธิการบริหารนิตยสารไฟน์อาร์ท ในปี 2563 เพื่อเป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อระหว่างผู้คนในโลกศิลปะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นศิลปิน ภัณฑารักษ์ นักสะสมงานศิลปะ นักศึกษา หรือผู้รักงานศิลปะ ภายในกลุ่มอาคารสามหลังย่านถนนหลานหลวง พื้นที่ใช้สอยอันหลากหลายตั้งแต่คาเฟ่ สตูดิโอ ห้องประชุมอเนกประสงค์ ห้องทํางานส่วนรวม ไปจนถึงห้องพัก เปิดโอกาสให้ทุกคนได้เข้ามาใช้เวลาร่วมกันเพื่อสร้างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ หรือแม้แต่การขยายความร่วมมือไปยังชุมชนภายนอกทั้งในไทยและต่างประเทศ

นอกจากผลงานศิลปะทีáสอดแทรกอยู่ในทุกซอกทุกมุมของพื้นที่ที่ได้รับการออกแบบมาเป็นอย่างดีผ่านสายตาของภัณฑารักษ์ ภายในอาณาบริเวณของแมตดอทยังประกอบไปด้วยห้องแสดงนิทรรศการสองแห่ง ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการนําเสนอศิลปินไทยและศิลปินนานาชาติให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้อย่างกว้างขวาง ได้แก่ Blacklist Gallery สําหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียนโดยศิลปินที่ได้รับเชิญให้เข้ามาทํางานร่วมกับเรา และ Matdot Gallery สําหรับแสดงผลงานของศิลปินในพํานัก

About the exhibition
MATDOT Art Center celebrates the 80th anniversary of the artistic journey of Kamol Tassananchalee. For the exhibition at MATDOT Art Center, visitors are taken back to the time before Kamol was honored as the artist of the two worlds. In 1975, Kamol used the vast expanse of Mohave Desert sand and the whole blue sky as a canvas. He arranged many gigantic three-dimensional color tubes at various points before allowing the natural wind to disperse the color powder across the desert. The result is a captivating image of vibrant lines on the sandy landscape.

This artwork marks the beginning of Kamol's exploration into the creation of art related to "color tubes," leading to numerous experiments and innovations in the field of printmaking. Subsequently, he developed various forms of mixed media artworks. In terms of conceptual thinking, Kamol intertwines stories related to Buddhist philosophy, as well as the way of life and local wisdom of the East, with contemporary knowledge and artistic innovations from the Western world. Through his art, he eloquently narrates a thoughtful exploration of ideas.

About Artist
Kamol Tassananchaleeis one of the pioneering artists in the early era of mixed-media art in Thailand. Kamol completed his undergraduate studies at Poh-chang Academy of Artsbefore receiving a scholarship to study art at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California, USA.After completing his education, Kamol pursued a career as an independent artist. He is recognized as one of the first Thai artists to experiment with creating mixed-media artworks that blend the ideas and philosophies of the East and the West, resulting in international acclaim.

Some of Kamol's notable works include a landartcreated in the sands of the United States between 1975 and 1978, a mixed-media mural titled "Buddha Footprint, Nang-Yai Series" (1978) featured in the art history book "Gardner’s ArtThrough the Ages (11th Edition)," and the "Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire & Water" series (2015), which was selected for exhibition at the Thai Pavilion during the 56thVenice Biennale in Italy.

In addition to his continuous artistic endeavors, Kamol hasbeen invited as a guest lecturer at various institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Over more than six decades in the art scene, Kamol has contributed to society by supporting the artsin Thailand. He has collaborated with the Department of Cultural Promotion and the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, on projects aimed at promoting art education and developing artistic potential in young people.

Kamol was honored as a National Artistof Thailandin the field of visual arts (painting and mixed media) in 1997.

About MATDOT Art Center
MATDOT Art Centeris a unique art space situated in the heart of Bangkok Old Town founded in 2020 by Tawatchai Somkong, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Magazine. It is intended to garner a connection with the art community from artists to curators, collectors, students, and aficionados alike. Contained within three buildings are a cafe, a studio, a meeting room, a co-working space, and even an accommodation quarter that is open to everyone. It is a space for people to gather and create, but is not limited to just the local community, it extends to the international community as well.

Besides the expertly curated works of art which are immersed in every corner of the premises, MATDOT Art Center also houses two exhibition rooms: the Blacklist Gallery showcases the works of local and international artists by invitation to promote an exchange of diverse knowledge; and the Matdot Gallery displays the works of the artist in residence.
