นิทรรศการภาพถ่าย "Same ๆ" ผลงานโดย Barry Macdonald จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 2 - 29 กันยายน 2566 ณ 6060 Arts Space

Barry Macdonald เป็นช่างภาพจากกรุงลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ นี่เป็นนิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งแรกของเขาในประเทศไทย ที่นําเสนอผลงานส่วนตัวเกี่ยวกับการถ่ายภาพแนวสตรีทและสารคดี ภาพชุดนี้ถูกรวบรวมจากการเดินทางมาที่ประเทศไทย ครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า ตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2560 ถึง พ.ศ. 2566 นิทรรศการจะจัดขึ้นเป็นเวลา 1 เดือนที่ 6060 Arts Space และจะมีการเผยแพร่ Zine ของภาพถ่ายในเวลาเดียวกัน

คําชี้ แจงของศิลปิน:

"เหมือน ๆ กันแหละ แต่..."
ประโยคที่ผมมักได้ยินเป็นประจําเพราะถูกใช้กับนักท่องเที่ยว บ่อย ๆ คําพูดที่แสดงถึงความยืดหยุ่นในแนวความคิดแบบไทยด้วยการซ้ำคําพูดที่จะเน้นย้ำสิ่ง ๆ หนึ่งให้เกิดความชัดเจนขึ้น เลยเป็นที่มาของการสร้างสรรค์หนังสือภาพ และนิทรรศการครั้งนี้

ขณะรวบรวมผลงาน ผมเริ่มสังเกตเห็นว่าชุดภาพถ่ายของผมที่ ถ่ายในประเทศไทยจะมีคอนเซ็ปต์บางอย่างที่ซ้ำไปซ้ำมาในตัวเองโดยที่ผมไม่รู้ตัว ทําให้ผมตระหนักได้ว่าผมมักจะถูกดึงดูดด้วยความชอบส่วนตัวแบบเดิม ๆ ระหว่างถ่ายภาพสตรีทในประเทศไทย

ผมเกิดและโตในกรุงลอนดอน และตั้งแต่ครั้งแรกที่ผมได้เดินทางมาประเทศไทย สิ่งที่ดึงดูดผมคือความสนุกสนาน และอารมณ์ขันของคนไทยที่ผมได้พบเจอในแต่ละวัน หลายสิ่งหลายอย่างนั้นช่างแตกต่างจากที่ ๆ ผมเกิดและเติบโตมาอย่างสิ้นเชิง ตั้งแต่ตลาดนัดกลางคืนไปจนถึงการใช้มอเตอร์ไซค์ให้จุได้ทั้งครอบครัว การต้อนรับอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ และความกันเองของผู้คนทําให้ประเทศไทยเป็นหนึ่งในประเทศที่ผมชอบที่สุดบนโลก ด้วยเหตุผลเหล่านี้เองทําให้ผมชอบที่จะถ่ายรูปเมื่อมาไทย

"ๆ" ไม้ยมกเป็นเครื่องหมายที่แสดงถึงการซ้ำคําที่ต้องการเน้นย้ำ ผมจึงใช้มันกับชื่อผลงานชุดนี้ "Same ๆ" ภาพชุดที่ผมได้จับความเหมือน ๆ กันแหละ แต่... ความขําขันของโลกคู่ขนานที่ผมได้เจอระหว่างอยู่ที่นี่

Barry Macdonald is a photographer from London, England. This is his first solo exhibition in Thailand of his personal work revolving around street and documentary photography. These photographs were taken on multiple trips to the Kingdom of Thailand between 2017-23. The exhibition will run for 1 month at the 6060 Arts Space and a Zine of the photographs will be released at the same time.

Artist Statement:
"Same same, but different" is a common phrase in Thailand mainly used with tourists. I think it shows a flexibility of thought and the Thai flair for translation, doubling the word for emphasis. Compiling the photos for this exhibition & zine I found I had a lot of pairs that embodied this concept, they naturally fell into place around this theme. For me they represent what I really enjoy about wandering around the streets in Thailand.

I grew up in London, and when I first visited Thailand I was struck by the relaxed humour in every day life. So many things were different from what I was used to back home, from night markets to entire families on motorbikes. People have generally been very welcoming and open with me there. It’s one of my favourite places in the world to take photographs because of this.

The ๆ symbol is used to indicate that the word or phrase preceding it is repeated, for the title I decided on “Same ๆ”. I hope my images have captured some of the humour and duality I have encountered.
