As the title implies, the exhibition explores the different insights into the word ‘body’ – both physical and architectural, as form and habitat – to illustrate the relation between gendered bodies and vernacular cultures and traditions in Indonesia. To this extent She is House is a prompt to consider the house as a site of birth and return, a ritualistic space of existence.

Featured in the exhibition are mixed-media, video and performance installations by four prominent Indonesian artists, Mella Jaarsma, Maharani Mancanagara, Citra Sasmita, and Natasha Tontey. Each of them, in different ways, examines the intersections between body, gender and power in Indonesian societies, and observes how traditional cultures are preserved, challenged or, ultimately, changed. Of relevance are the places of birth or cultural reference of the four artists: Java, West Sumatra, Bali and North Sulawesi. Known for their historical importance, each of these islands and local cultures foregrounds diverse belief systems and community-based practices in which matrilineal narratives run in parallel to patriarchal ideology.

The artists (Mella Jaarsma, Maharani Mancanagara, and Citra Sasmita) with the curator will be present on the opening night on Saturday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in 333 Gallery, Warehouse 30. As part of the educational programme for this exhibition on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m., there will be an artists’ talk moderated by the curator. The exhibition catalogue including a curatorial essay and extended literature will be launched at the gallery on Sunday, June 18, at 2 p.m.

About the Artists
These female artists from the Indonesia have been internationally acclaimed and prolific in contemporary art scene, contributing to a number of solo shows and group exhibitions in the leading museums, galleries, and Art Biennales around the world.

About the Curator
Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani, a prominent independent scholar and curator of Southeast Asian contemporary art, is one of the appointed curators for the Bangkok Art Biennale 2022. Her articles have been published in several renowned academic journals.

ตามความหมายที่แฝงนัยยะในชื่องาน นิทรรศการนี้ได้สำรวจแง่มุมต่างๆ ของคำว่า ‘ร่างกาย’ ทั้งในด้านกายภาพ สถาปัตยกรรมอันหมายถึงรูปทรงและที่พักอาศัยเพื่อถ่ายทอดถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างร่างกายและวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่น ตลอดจนขนบธรรมเนียมต่างๆ ของประเทศอินโดนีเซีย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง นิทรรศการนี้มุ่งเน้นไปที่การนำเสนอเรื่องราวของร่างกายในเชิงเพศสภาพ ร่างกายที่บ่อยครั้งที่มิได้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องหรือเป็นแต่เพียงเรื่องราวที่มีจุดเชื่อมโยงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น ทว่าในความเป็นจริงแล้ว ร่างกายถือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวัฏจักรแห่งชีวิตด้วยเช่นกัน แนวความคิดนี้เป็นสิ่งที่นิทรรศการ She is House ได้นำเสนอให้เราได้ฉุกคิดว่าบ้านเป็นสถานที่เกิด เป็นที่ที่เรากลับมาและเป็นสถานที่ประกอบพิธีกรรมในขณะที่ดำรงชีวิตอยู่

นิทรรศการ She is House นำเสนอผลงานทั้งในรูปแบบสื่อผสม งานวิดีโออาร์ต และงานเพอร์ฟอร์มานซ์อินสตอลเลชั่น (Performance Installation) ของสี่ศิลปินอินโดนีเซียคือ Mella Jaarsma, Maharani Mancanagara, Citra Sasmita, และ Natasha Tontey โดยผลงานแต่ละชิ้นเป็นการค้นหาคำตอบในวิถีทางที่ต่างกันไปเพื่อทำให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างร่างกาย เพศ และความยิ่งใหญ่ของวัฒนธรรมต่างๆ ในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย และเพื่อสังเกตว่าวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมได้รับการอนุรักษ์ ถูกท้าทายและแปรเปลี่ยนไปโดยสิ้นเชิงอย่างไร นอกจากนี้เป็นการนำเสนอถึงความเชื่อมโยงกันระหว่างสถานที่เกิดหรือการอ้างอิงทางวัฒนธรรมของสี่ศิลปินจากชวา สุราเวสีทางตะวันตก บาหลี และสุลาเวสีทางตอนเหนือ เกาะแต่ละแห่งที่กล่าวมานี้ล้วนมีความสำคัญทางด้านประวัติศาสตร์ อีกทั้งวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นทำให้มีความเชื่อที่หลากหลายตลอดจนการประกอบพิธีกรรมทางจิตวิญญาณและเรื่องราวการสืบทอดเชื้อสายทางมารดาอันดำเนินคู่ขนานไปกับคตินิยมที่ให้เพศชายเป็นผู้นำ

ศิลปินจากประเทศอินโดนีเซียทั้งสี่ท่านคือ Mella Jaarsma, Maharani Mancanagara, Citra Sasmita, and Natasha Tontey ล้วนเป็นที่ยอมรับในฐานะศิลปินหญิงที่มีความโดดเด่นในแง่ของการสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะร่วมสมัยมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง ผลงานได้รับการจัดแสดงทั้งในรูปแบบนิทรรศการเดี่ยวและกลุ่มในพิพิธภัณฑ์ แกลเลอรี รวมถึงนิทรรศการศิลปะนานาชาติ (เบียนนาเล่) ในประเทศต่างๆ ทั่วโลก

ศิลปิน (Mella Jaarsma, Maharani Mancanagara และ Citra Sasmita) พร้อมด้วยภัณฑารักษ์จะมาร่วมในพิธีเปิดนิทรรศการในวันเสาร์ที่ 3 มิถุนายน เวลา 18.00 น. ณ 333 Gallery ที่ Warehouse 30 และในช่วงเวลาที่จัดนิทรรศการ เราได้จัดกิจกรรมเชิงให้ความรู้ในวันอาทิตย์ที่ 4 มิถุนายน เวลา 14.00 น. ซึ่งจะเป็นการพูดคุยกับศิลปินและดำเนินรายการโดยภัณฑารักษ์ นอกจากนี้ในวันอาทิตย์ที่ 18 มิถุนายน เวลา 14.00 น. จะมีการเปิดตัวแคตาล็อกที่จัดทำขึ้นเป็นพิเศษสำหรับงานนี้ โดยในเล่มจะมีบทความที่เขียนขึ้นโดยภัณฑารักษ์
