นิทรรศการนี้เกิดขึ้นในช่วงที่ชีวิตของ Lao Xie Xie และผู้คนทั่วโลกต่างต้องต้องเผชิญหน้ากับการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งใหญ่ ตลอดสามปีที่ไม่สามารถออกจากประเทศจีน และอีกสองเดือนของการล็อกดาวน์ที่ไร้เหตุผลในมหานครเซี่ยงไฮ้ เหตุการณ์ทั้งหมดทำให้ศิลปินมองเห็นถึงอำนาจของรัฐบาลและทางการจีนที่ควบคุมชีวิตของประชากรได้ง่าย ๆ ทุกฝีก้าว แม้กระทั่งในเมืองที่มีความเจริญทางวัฒนธรรมหลากหลายอย่างเซี่ยงไฮ้ จนปัจจุบันที่วิกฤตยังไม่จบสิ้น การหยุดชะงักของสภาพเศรษฐกิจและชีวิตของผู้คนก็อาจต้องใช้เวลายาวนานในการเยียวยารักษา ศิลปินจึงตัดสินใจเดินทางออกจากประเทศจีนโดยไม่ได้รู้สึกเสียดายอะไรนัก

เวลาผ่านพ้นมาจนถึงช่วงเวลาที่เราสามารถกลับมาเดินชมงานศิลปะและภาพถ่ายในแกลเลอรีได้อีกครั้ง Lao Xie Xie จึงได้ตัดสินใจจัดนิทรรศการขึ้นในกรุงเทพฯ เมืองที่เขานับว่าเป็นบ้านหลังที่สอง ที่นี่เป็นเมืองแรกในเอเชียที่เขาได้เข้ามาอาศัยอยู่และแวดล้อมไปด้วยผู้คนที่สบายใจที่จะอยู่ด้วย นิทรรศการนี้ได้รวบรวมภาพถ่ายที่ศิลปินภูมิใจและเป็นผลงานที่ดีที่สุดในตลอดช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา เพื่อถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกทั้งรักทั้งเกลียดต่อ ‘ประเทศจีน’ บ้านเกิดของ Lao Xie Xie

This exhibition comes at an unexpected point in my life when things started changing. After three years in China without leaving the country, and two months of absurd lockdown in Shanghai. We all realized that the Chinese dictatorship is serious and that "Big brother" can simply control your life. Nobody in Shanghai, a multicultural metropolis, thought it could ever happen. As it will take a long time for the city to recover from its current state of near-death, and finally, I've decided to temporarily depart China without any regrets.

And here we are, bringing art and photography back into our daily lives. I'm grateful that this show is taking place in Bangkok, which I think of as my second home. Bangkok was the first city in Asia where I set foot, and I feel happy staying here since it is a comfortable space to me. This exhibition will show some of my best photos from the previous years to celebrate my work and also my love-hate relationship with China.
