นิทรรศการ "Déjà vu: When the Sun Rises in the West" ผลงานโดย นที อุตฤทธิ์ (Natee Utarit) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 4 มีนาคม - 7 พฤษภาคม 2565 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันศุกร์ที่ 4 มีนาคม 2565 เวลา 17.30 และ 18.30 น. ณ หอศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร : Art Centre Silpakorn University

เดจาวู (Déjà vu) คือ ความรู้สึกหวนระลึกถึงภาพหรือเหตุการณ์ที่ได้เคยเกิดขึ้น เป็นความรู้สึกนึกคิดของศิลปินที่ได้ร้อยเรียงความทรงจำของอดีตและปัจจุบันเข้าด้วยกัน และนำเสนอผ่านผลงานชุด เดจาวู ที่เริ่มต้นขึ้นในปี 2562 ผลงานในนิทรรศการเล่าย้อนไปยังจุดเริ่มต้นของการเผชิญหน้ากันแบบสมมติของพระพุทธเจ้ากับอารยธรรมกรีกโบราณ สัญลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมของตะวันออกและตะวันตกที่ปรากฎผ่านผลงานต่างๆ ในนิทรรศการนี้

จากการค้นหาอัตลักษณ์ไปพร้อมกับการสำรวจสภาพการณ์ที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากลัทธิอาณานิคม นทีจึงได้ทำการวิเคราะห์วัฒนธรรมของตนเองผ่านการสะท้อนคิดซึ่งนำเขาไปสู่วาทกรรมเรื่องลัทธิอาณานิคมผ่านพุทธศาสนาอันเป็นแก่นทางจิตวิญญาณและวัฒนธรรมของเอเชีย สื่อในงานของนทีมีบทบาทสำคัญยิ่ง ตั้งแต่จิตรกรรมและประติมากรรมไปจนถึงงานปักลายผ้า งานกระจกสีและงานภาพพิมพ์แกะไม้ แต่ละสื่อสอดคล้องกับเหตุการณ์ในประวัติศาสตร์ซึ่งมีบทบาทในการกำหนดหลักเกณฑ์แบบตะวันตก

ผลงานเหล่านี้พลิกผันสิ่งที่ไม่คาดคิดในทางประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรม ราวกับการหว่านเมล็ดพันธุ์แห่งความเป็นไปได้ในคำถามที่ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้น หากดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นทางทิศตะวันตก หากตะวันออกซึ่งแสดงออกด้วยพระพุทธเจ้าได้พบกับตะวันตก ด้วยแง่มุมธรรมดาสามัญจากต่างวัฒนธรรมนี้ ทำให้นิทรรศการนี้เป็นดั่งเส้นไหมที่ศิลปินนำมาถักทอเข้าด้วยกันให้เกิดเป็นเรื่องราวอีกแง่มุมหนึ่งของตะวันตกและตะวันออกได้อย่างสมบูรณ์

Déjà vu, referring to the phenomenon of ‘recalling scenes and events as if they have happened before’ explains how the artist’s mind operates by interweaving re-envisionings of the past and present. The Déjà vu series, initially conceived in 2019, starts with Buddha’s hypothetical journey to the West to meet Greco-Roman culture and other eastern and western symbols in the exhibition.

Due to searching for identity while locating his own colonial conditioning, still present in Thailand, Natee moves towards a reflective analysis of his own culture that enables him to enter the colonial discourse through Buddhism: Asia’s spiritual and cultural node. In this process of self-identification, the mediums and compositions of his work play a crucial role. Varying from painting and sculpture to embroidery, stained glass and woodcut, each medium corresponds to historical moments that have contributed to defining the Western canons.

The featured works overturn what is historically and culturally improbable, thus sowing the seeds of possibility: What if the sun rises in the west? What if the East, manifested as the figure of the Buddha, met the West? Consequently, the common aspects of different cultures prominently become the threads to weave a new Western/Eastern narrative by artist’s hand.
