Awesome Dude นิทรรศการที่นำเสนอศิลปะแนวที่เคยถูกมองว่ามิใช่งานวิจิตรศิลป์ทรงคุณค่า แต่กลับมาเฟื่องฟูเป็นที่ยอมรับและนิยมทั่วโลกเป็นอย่างมากเมื่อไม่กี่ปีมานี้ รวมถึงเป็นกระแสร้อนแรงในเมืองไทยขณะนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแนว Pop-Surrealism และ Street Art รวมถึง Toy Art จนถูกจัดให้เป็นกิ่งก้านสาขาของ Pop Art แขนงใหญ่ซึ่งเริ่มต้นมาตั้งแต่ยุค50 ในอังกฤษและสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่มักนำเสนอเรื่องบริโภคนิยม กระแสนิยม และการโฆษณา ที่มีศิลปินอย่าง Andy Warhol อีกทั้ง Pop-Surrealism ก็ถูกยังถูกจัดเป็นรุ่นหลาน หนึ่งในแขนงย่อยของ Surrealism ลัทธิศิลปะที่ดูจินตนาการแบบเหนือจริงซึ่งมีมาตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่20 โดยมีศิลปินเช่น Salvador Dali อีกด้วย

ก่อนยุคมิลเลนเนียม งานศิลปะได้ถูกแบ่งแยกชนชั้นชัดเจนว่าแบบไหนเป็น ศิลปะไฮอาร์ต ที่ถือเป็นศิลปะชั้นสูงที่ทรงคุณค่า เป็นส่วนยอด ส่วนงานประเภทอื่นจะถูกจัดให้เป็นศิลปะที่มีคุณค่าระดับรองลงมาหรือข้างเคียง เช่น กราฟฟิตี้ ภาพประกอบ ภาพแนวแฟนตาซี ลายสัก ฯลฯ จากผู้ที่ถูกเหยียดจากโลกศิลปะว่างานศิลปะของพวกเขาไม่ใช่ Fine Art (วิจิตรศิลป์) ทั้งศิลปะแบบPop-Surrealism(หรือLowbrow) และศิลปะข้างถนน (street art) ต่างก็มีพื้นเพและความคล้ายคลึงกันหลายประการ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความเชื่อมโยงกับ Underground Comics ลายสัก ศิลปะภาพประกอบ ดนตรีนอกกระแส ดนตรีใต้ดิน เช่น เพลงแนวพั้งค์ แรป และฮิปฮอป หรือความเป็นขบถต่อระบบ ชั้นชนสูงและนายทุน ด้วยการใช้รูปหน้าเซเลบ นักการเมือง หรือคาแรคเตอร์การ์ตูนดังมาอยู่ในงานศิลปะของตน เพื่อสื่อสารข้อความการต่อต้านสังคมการเมืองการปกครอง อีกประการหนึ่งคือ ศิลปินที่ร่วมบุกเบิกต่างก็มักไม่ได้ศึกษาจากสำนักศิลปะ หากแต่เรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองเป็นส่วนใหญ่

อนึ่ง ทั้งสองแนวศิลปะต่าง ๆ ก็มีลักษณะและที่มาในแนวทางของตนเอง ดังเช่น

Lowbrow Art หากเปิดดิกบางสำนักจะให้ความหมายว่า ไม่สนใจกับศิลปะแบบซีเรียสๆ และมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับผู้คนที่ไม่อยากข้องแวะกับเรื่องหนักๆ ซีเรียสๆ เป็นกระแสศิลปะที่มีรากเหง้าจาก Underground comics หรือ ดนตรีพั้งค์พัฒนาสู่ Pop-Surrrealism ศิลปะแขนงหนึ่งที่มีศิลปินตัวพ่อ เช่น Mark Ryden หรือ Robert Williams จากแรกๆที่Lowbrowมีความดิบ หวือหวาตรงไปตรงมา แต่ผลงานและศิลปินรุ่นต่อๆมา ก็ได้ปรับให้มีความละเอียด ลุ่มลึก สวยงามเรียบเนียนมากขึ้น จนกลายเป็น Pop-Surrealism แต่ยังมีกลิ่นอายเดิมบางอย่างแฝงอยู่ หากรูปวาดแนวSurrealismเป็นภาพจินตนาการคิดฝันจากจิตใต้สำนึก (subconscious) หรือจิตไร้สำนึก (unconscious) ของศิลปิน ทว่า ภาพที่อยู่ในจิตใต้สำนึกของศิลปินแนว Pop-Surrealism นั้นเป็นซีนสไตล์ป็อปหรือมีแต่วัตถุที่ดูป็อปร่วมสมัยนั่นเอง

Street Art จากเริ่มแรกที่เด็กวัยรุ่นเที่ยววาดรูป พ่นกำแพงข้างถนน บนตึกรามบ้านช่อง รถไฟใต้ดินเป็นตัวอักษรคำต่างๆที่เรียกว่ากราฟฟิตี้บ้าง หรือเป็นตัวคาแรคเตอร์ที่ออกแบบให้เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของตนเอง และสื่อเรื่องราวต่างๆที่แฝงความเป็นขบถต่อระบบระเบียบบ้าง แต่เมื่อเวลาผ่านไป พวกเขาเติบโตขึ้น จึงต่อยอดสู่ชิ้นงานที่สามารถจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการได้ ซื้อสะสมหรือแขวนบ้านได้ จนได้รับการยอมรับในแวดวงศิลปะที่เป็นกระแสนิยมทั่วโลก มีศิลปินที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่าง Banksy หรือ Kaws เป็นต้น

ทว่า ด้วยเสพง่าย สบายตา เข้าถึงผู้คนได้หลากหลายและถูกพบเห็นบ่อยจนคุ้นเคย จนมีการการพัฒนามาแล้วหลายเจนเนอเรชั่นจนสุกงอม อีกทั้งมีการข้ามสายกันไปมาในผลงานของศิลปินทั้งสองแนว รูปแบบศิลปะทั้งสองแบบจึงกลายเป็นกระแสนิยมที่เข้าถึงมหาชนจำนวนมากได้ง่ายเรียกได้ว่าป็อปปูล่า หรือป็อปนั่นเอง จนถูกจัดเข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Pop Art เลยทีเดียว

Awesome Dude!! นิทรรศการที่ต้อนรับทุกท่านเป็นเหมือนสหายกัน พูดภาษาเดียวกันอย่างไม่มีแบ่งแยก ด้วยภาษาศิลปะที่เข้าใจง่าย ไม่ต้องใช้ความรู้วิชาการมาก ไม่ครุ่นคิดน่าปวดหัว หรือซ่อนปริศนาให้ตีความซับซ้อนมากมาย หากแสดงออกอย่างสนุก มันส์ เพลินๆชิลๆ เอ็นจอยโลก แต่ร่วมสมัย เป็นกระแสนิยม เนื้อหาสะท้อนโลกยุคปัจจุบัน ซึ่งศิลปินที่มีความขบถต่อทุนนิยม ผู้ชมงานศิลปะ องค์กรศิลปะ นักสะสมและนักวิจารณ์จนถึงสื่อมวลชน ต่างยอมรับเข้าเป็นพวกต่อกันและกัน จึงเสมือนร้องทักกับศิลปินแบบเพื่อนซี้ถึงผลงานของพวกเขาว่า วู้วว เดือดมากเพื่อนนน Awesome Dude!!

From underground to mainstream
From art on the sidewalk to white wall exhibition at Top-tier Gallery

Awesome Dude!! Exhibition proudly presents art that was considered far from prestigious fine art, which took its turn to be accepted and appreciated all around the world within the past few years and is currently in its hype in Thailand. Art from Pop-Surrealism and Street Art, including Toy art has been categorized as the type of art that branches out from the big ‘ism’s like Pop Art, an art movement which debuted from the early 50s both in Britain and the United States. Pop art tells stories about consumerism, popular culture and advertising with Andy Warhol as the movement’s key figure. Pop-Surrealism is also considered the descendent of Surrealism, an art movement that highlights imagination beyond the mundane that starts from the early 20th century with Salvador Dali playing the main role of the movement.

Before the millennials, Art was visibly classified into classes. High Art is considered as prestigious and highly regarded, ranking at the top of the art pyramid. While other works have been categorized as less importance, a second-grade art. Both Pop-Surrealism (also called Lowbrow Art) and art seen on the sidewalk (Street) have been shunned by the art world as the art circle labelled their works as non-fine art. Both art genres have underlying background and similarities in several ways, be it their link with Underground Comics, tattoos, illustration art, non-mainstream music, underground music such as Punk, Rap and Hip-hop. The content of art can also stretch towards being rebels against high-society and business tycoons by incorporating visuals of celebrities, politicians or well-known cartoon characters into their work to convey the message of anti-society, politics and dictatorship. Another common trait shared is that the artists pioneering the two movements tend to be self-taught and did not receive formal art training.

Despite their common characteristics, the two art movements have its own unique roots and characteristics. If you were to look up the word ‘Lowbrow Art’ in a dictionary, some would define the term as the type of art that takes no interest in making art that speaks about serious subject matter. The art’s motive in underground comics or Punk music that sprung into Pop-Surrealism, with famous names like Mark Ryden and Robert Williams. Early Lowbrow art started off as raw, candid art, but artists in the later generations started to create works that are more subtle, elaborate and attention to detail. The works slowly emerged into the new genre, Pop-Surrealism, while retaining certain elements from the early phase. If we were to describe Surrealism as an imaginative expression from subconscious or even unconscious, what lies beneath the mind of Pop-Surrealism artists are popular scenes or only pop, contemporary materials.

Street Art started off as teenagers spraying phrases(known as Graffiti) and characters truly unique to the artist along the sidewalk, building walls and underground trains. Most of the work’s messages are hidden with the concept of rebellion against the norms. As time passes, the art motif is strengthened and gradually implemented into works of art displayed in an exhibition setting, which can be bought by art enthusiasts to be hang on the wall in their homes. From that stage, street art finally stepped into the art world and became a world phenomenon. The established artists of the genre are mega artists such as Banksy and Kaws, among others.

Both Street Art and Pop-Surrealism constantly has crossovers among works of both genres. With visuals pleasant to the eyes and relatable motifs that easily come across a wider audience with familiar images, the two movements had entered the mainstream, in the other words, it had become ‘POP’ or so-called real popular and officially be included under the umbrella of Pop Art.

Awesome Dude!! The art exhibition that welcomes you all as our mate, speaking the same language without finger pointing class or status. The art language expressed through our curated pieces are digestible, does not require in-depth knowledge or complex symbolism solving game, but expressed with a good fun, positive vibe and is in-the-now. It is a meeting place of artists revolting against capitalism, the art audience, art organizations, collectors and art critics that all nod their head as the same team – therefore it is just like greetings with fellow artwork like best mates saying “woah! This is LIT!” Awesome Dude! “

The curated exhibition features work with various media ranging from paintings, sculptures, prints and mixed media works of over 35 Thai and International artists. The show will be taking over the entire 2 floors of Joyman Gallery, Bangkok from 16 January - 27 February, 2022. Join our rave opening with not-to-miss activities of graffiti & mural painting show and blasting party on 16th January, 2022 from 3 PM onwards.
