เรื่องย่อ ตำนานบัวแดง

..กาลครั้งหนึ่ง ชาวบ้านพบหญิงงามลอยน้ำมาติดหน้าหมู่บ้าน พวกเขาช่วยกันพาเธอขึ้นฝั่ง ด้วยความงามและกลิ่นหอมของเธอทำให้ชายหนุ่มต่อสู้แย่งชิงกัน จนเดือนร้อนถึงเจ้าเมืองต้องลงมายุติศึก โดยรับสั่งให้พาเธอไปอาศัยกับฤาษีและนักพรตหญิงทั้ง 12 ในป่าศักดิ์สิทธิ์ วันหนึ่งขณะหญิงงามปีนขึ้นเก็บผลไม้ ให้เผอิญประจำเดือนหยดแรกของเธอตกลงใส่ร่างชายคนหนึ่งผู้มีอาคมแกร่งกล้าที่เดินผ่านมาทางนี้พอดี ทำให้เวทมนต์ของเขาเสื่อมฤทธิ์ลง ชายคนดังกล่าวขอให้เธอชดใช้ด้วย “ความสาวบริสุทธิ์” อันเป็นสิ่งต้องห้าม ทั้งสองจึงลักลอบมีความสัมพันธ์กัน ครั้นเมื่อพิธีอาบน้ำศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ฤๅษีและเหล่าสตรีผู้บำเพ็ญตบะทั้ง ๑๒ โปรยดอกไม้นานาชนิดลงในบ่อน้ำและอัญเชิญเธอลงสระ น้ำใสบริสุทธิ์กลับสีแดงฉาน บ่อน้ำไม่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์อีกต่อไป เหล่าผู้ทำพิธีและชาวบ้านต่างพากันสาปแช่งเธอ ด้วยความโกรธแค้นเธอจึงถูกลงโทษด้วยการเฉือนหน้าอกและตัดอวัยวะเพศเพื่อเป็นการเซ่นไหว้ขอขมาแก่บ่อน้ำศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ก่อนเธอสิ้นลม เธอตั้งจิตอธิษฐานต่อพระอินทร์ว่า ชาติหน้าขอให้เธอเกิดมาเป็น “ดอกบัว” ดอกไม้เพื่อรับใช้ความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ตลอดไป

กมลลักษณ์ สุขชัย ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่แต่งนิทานเรื่องนี้ขึ้น โดยอิงตำนานพื้นบ้านไทยที่มีทัศนคติเชิงลบต่อสตรีเพศ จากนั้นจึงนำมาสร้างเป็นชุดผลงานภาพถ่าย โดยอาศัยแรงบันดาลใจด้านภาพจากละครโทรทัศน์แนวจักรๆวงศ์ๆ ด้วยเจตนาทำให้ทั้งสีและพื้นผิวของภาพเหมือนรูปประกอบนิยายน้ำเน่าจากนิตยสารราคาถูก ส่งผลทำให้ผลงานของเธอชุดนี้ดูดิบและเหนือจริงอย่างน่าสนใจ

ภัณฑารักษ์ของคัดมันดู โฟโต้ แกลเลอรี่ มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ กล่าวว่า “กมลลักษณ์ผลิตผลงานชุดนี้เหมือนงานสร้างภาพยนตร์ ตั้งแต่เขียนบท กำกับการแสดง ออกแบบชุด ถ่ายทำ และตกแต่งสีภาพ เธอใช้ความรู้ที่เรียนมาและประสบการณ์ชีวิตที่แวดล้อมด้วยป้าๆน้าๆอาๆ ผู้หญิงมาเป็นส่วนผสมในงานชุดนี้ และขอให้ทุกคนในครอบครัวร่วมเป็นแบบแสดงอีกด้วย จึงทำให้ผลงานดูสมจริงเข้ากับเรื่องแต่งอย่างดี”

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน

กลมลักษณ์ สุขชัย (เกิด 2537, ราชบุรี) ศิลปิน-ช่างภาพไทยที่ได้รับคัดเลือกให้เป็นหนึ่งใน 20 ศิลปินภาพถ่ายที่น่าจับตามองที่สุดในปี 2020 จากนิตยสาร FOAM - Photography Museum Amsterdam ประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์ - ปัจจุบันเป็นศิลปินอิสระ สังกัดกลุ่ม Asian Spiritual Playground

จบการศึกษา ปริญญาตรี ออกแบบงานสร้างภาพยนตร์ (Production design) จากม.ศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ (ประสานมิตร) และ ปริญญาโท สาขาทัศนศิลป์ (Visual Art) จากสถาบันเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้า ลาดกระบัง

The story of RED LOTUS

Once upon a time a beautiful maiden floated downstream to a village and was pulled up on the bank. Her fragrance and loveliness drove the men fighting mad for possession of her. The king had to intervene by sending her off to live a celibate life in the sacred forest with a hermit and his 12 women disciples. One day as the beautiful maiden climbed a tree to pick some fruit, the first drop of her first menstrual blood happened to fall on a passing man, thereby destroying the potency of his magical powers. He demanded that she atoned for this with the forbidden sacrifice of her virginity. At the sacred bathing rite, the hermit and his 12 celibate female acolytes scattered multi-coloured flowers over the surface of the pond and invited her to enter the pure, clear water, which immediately turned blood red, desecrating the pond’s sanctity. Outraged, the king, the ritual celebrants and the people all cursed her. To punish her, they sliced off her breasts and genitalia in ritual sacrifice to beg forgiveness from the sacred pond. As she breathed her last, she made a wish upon Indra, king of the gods, that in her next life she’d be reborn as the ‘Red Lotus’, forever in service to Holiness.

New generation artist Kamonlak Sukchai made up this story in the spirit of traditional Thai folk tales with all their negative attitudes towards the female sex. The photography she created from it is visually inspired by period costume dramas on Thai television that tell of the fates of royal characters, with the colours and textures of ‘penny dreadful’ magazine illustrations, which bestow this series with a surreal fascination and primitivity.

Manit Sriwanichpoom, Kathmandu Photo Gallery curator: “Kamonlak produced this series as if she were making a movie—from the script, direction of actors and costume design to the photography and colourisation. Combining her studies in film production design with personal experience growing up among a gaggle of aunts, she cast her whole family as characters of her homemade ‘traditional’ folk tale, nicely and effectively closing the loop between reality and fantasy.”

About Artist

Kamonlak Sukchai (b.1994 in Rachaburi) holds a BA in Film Production Design from Srinakharinwirot University (Prasarnmitr) and an MA in Visual Arts from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang.

‘RED LOTUS’ was selected for inclusion in Dutch Contemporary Photography Magazine Foam’s ‘FOAM TALENT’ alongside just 20 other artists worldwide. Now she is a Freelance Artist, Represented by Asian Spiritual Playground
