CASE Space Revolution proudly presents...
“Erstwhile Maps”, a collage exhibition by Gary-Ross Pastrana. His collage practice could be traced back to 1999 when he started making small paper-based works using magazine cut-outs that were primarily meant as exercises in color and compositional strategies. These pieces were more personal in nature and were never conceived to be shown. Four years later, a friend from an artist-run space made a studio visit and was surprised to find out about the works and finally convinced Pastrana to mount them in an exhibition.

The artist has sustained this practice since, finding time in between larger-scale projects to continue making small, intimate collages as a kind of personal, regenerative act. For this show, Pastrana has made a selection from his ongoing collage_a_day_everyday project, this time utilizing collage to develop a constant and possibly life-long daily practice.

This glimpse into Pastrana’s collage-based works provides an interesting counterpoint to his more well-known object and concept-based projects, offering new insights into his thought process and his long-standing investigations into meaning, form, and material.

CASE Space Revolution ภูมิใจนำเสนอนิทรรศการ “Erstwhile Maps” ผลงานภาพตัดแปะโดย แกรี่-รอส พาสตรานา เป็นผลงานที่เขาใช้เป็นการศึกษาเรื่องสีและการจัดองค์ประกอบด้วยการตัดกระดาษจากแมกกาซีนและเทคนิคต่างๆ เริ่มต้นขึ้นตั้งแต่ปีค.ศ.1999 โดยผลงานเหล่านี้ไม่เคยถูกจัดแสดงที่ไหนมาก่อน จนกระทั้งถูกหยิบขึ้นมาเข้ากรอบและจัดแสดงโดยกลุ่มเพื่อนศิลปินที่จัดการพื้นที่ศิลปะใน 4 ปีหลังจากนั้น

จากนั้นมาศิลปินได้ใช้กระบวนการเหล่านี้เป็นการพัฒนาฝึกฝน และได้ขยายเป็นโปรเจ็คส่วนตัวสร้างผลงานชิ้นเล็กๆ และการสร้างภาพใหม่ๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง ผ่าน collage_a_day_everyday โดยพาสตรานาได้คัดเลือกผลงานจากโปรเจ็คสำหรับนิทรรศการนี้

Gary-Ross Pastrana (b.1977)
lives and works in Manila, Philippines.
In Pastrana’s practice, everyday objects are seemingly drafted to participate in circuitous thought experiments, subjecting things to deliberate processes that allow them to be reformulated as inquiries into the nature of things and other sublime, invisible forces that permeate our everyday life.
From melting his mother’s rings to make a miniature sword (only to return it back after making a small gash on his arm) to selling off 99% percent of a car as junk and using the money to make a golden bolt that was screwed back to the remaining 1% percent of the car, Pastrana hatches situations where things are hurdled through precarious yet transformative conditions, affording process a stake in shaping the narratives, resulting in objects imbued with renewed insights towards materiality, objecthood, value and meaning.
