The Sea of Japan was formed by Japan archipelago, which separated from the northern pacific ocean. While it is isolated, it has been integral to economy and culture for Japanese people who are living along the coast.

Akita prefecture is located 500 kilometers away from Tokyo. Most Akita people are living in harmony with nature, about 70% of the land is covered with forest and has the Sea of Japan as its west territory. As prefecture historically had an abundant mining resources and forestry industry, it was one of the richest prefectures in the Tohoku region in the 18th Century. Nowadays, Akita has been away from the urban cities as it has the elder and higher death rate in the country; while its birth rate is lowest.

Since the population has shrunk, drastic changes are needed for revitalizing the local economy and cultures, but so far little has changed. Popular areas of the city may survive, but it would not be happening in the areas that are not so popular. Like seaside area, there is a lot of vacant houses, which eventually turned into abandoned places.

At CASE Space Revolution, the three Japanese artists from Akita are invited to exhibit their art works in which its relevance to local areas in Akita. Kazuyuki Miyamoto has recorded the variety of sounds in Akita Prefecture, to narrate the rapidly changing landscape and environment of the Sea of Japan. Yu Kusanagi presents his photograph that captures the intimate moment of natural phenomena of his hometown. Chinami Nishikawa has been investigating the coastal area by foot, and presenting an installation that examines the ecological significance of the waste collected during the survey and transforms it into a work of art.

The exhibition presents the concept of Japanese locality to Thai audiences through the works of three Japanese artists. The artists are based in Akita; the changing landscapes and environments facing the residents on the coast of Akita are viewed from the same standpoint as the residents from the artist's point of view. They visualize the ecological phenomena and problems peculiar to this era, unraveling the context of contemporary art through works based on our sense of life.

'ทะเลญี่ปุ่น' เกิดขึ้นจากการก่อตัวของหมู่เกาะญี่ปุ่นกลายเป็นแนวกั้นแบ่งทะเลออกจากมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกทางตอนเหนือ ถึงแม้จะดูโดดเดี่ยวแต่ทะเลญี่ปุ่นก็มีความสำคัญต่อภาพรวมของเศรษฐกิจวัฒนธรรมและการดำรงชีวิตของชาวญี่ปุ่นที่อาศัยอยู่ตามแนวชายฝั่ง

จังหวัดอะกิตะตั้งอยู่ทางตอนเหนือห่างจากกรุงโตเกียวประมาณ 500 กิโลเมตร ชาวบ้านส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่อย่างกลมกลืนกับธรรมชาติ กว่า 70% ของพื้นที่จังหวัดปกคลุมไปด้วยป่าไม้ มีทะเลญี่ปุ่นเป็นเขตแดนทางทิศตะวันตก และเนื่องจากเป็นจังหวัดที่อุดมไปด้วยทรัพยากรทางธรรมชาติ ในอดีตจึงมีการทำเหมือง อุตสาหกรรมป่าไม้ตลอดจนเป็นเมืองท่าที่มีการค้าขายอย่างคึกคัก ทำให้จังหวัดอะกิตะในศตวรรษที่ 18 ถือเป็นเขตการปกครองที่ร่ำรวยที่สุดในภูมิภาคโทโฮกุ แต่ปัจจุบันนี้จังหวัดอะกิตะอยู่ห่างไกลจากนิยามของการเป็นเมืองใหญ่ที่เศรษฐกิจเติบโตสู่การเป็นเมืองที่มีจำนวนของผู้สูงอายุและอัตราการเสียชีวิตสูงเป็นอันดับต้นๆของประเทศในขณะที่อัตราการเกิดกลับลดต่ำลง

เมื่อจำนวนประชากรเริ่มหดตัวลงความพยายามต่อการสร้างการเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ถูกยกระดับให้เป็นวาระสำคัญเพื่อเร่งฟื้นฟูเศรษฐกิจ วิถีชีวิตและวัฒนธรรม ที่นับวันจะค่อยๆหายไป แต่จนถึงบัดนี้การเปลี่ยนแปลงมีกลับมีให้เห็นเพียงเล็กน้อย ในพื้นที่ที่เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวอาจอยู่รอดแต่จะเกิดขึ้นได้ยากหรือแทบไม่เกิดขึ้นเลยในพื้นที่ที่ไม่มีแหล่งท่องเที่ยว ตัวอย่างเช่นพื้นที่ริมทะเลที่สามารถพบเห็นบ้านร้างมากมายและจะกลายเป็นแหล่งเสื่อมโทรมในที่สุด

ณ CASE Space Revolution ศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่นจากจังหวัดอะกิตะ ถูกเชิญมาจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะที่เกี่ยวของกับทะเลญี่ปุ่นในอะกิตะ
คาซุยูกิ มิยาโมโต ทำการบันทึกความหลากหลายของเสียงภายในจังหวัด โดยผลงานสื่อถึงภูมิทัศน์และสภาพแวดลอมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็วของทะเลญี่ปุ่น ยู คุซานากิ นำเสนอระยะห่างทางกายภาพระหว่างเลนส์ถ่ายภาพกับความงามของปรากฏการณ์ทางธรรมชาติ อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของพื้นที่แก่ผู้ชม ชินามิ นิชิคาวะ ได้เดินตรวจพื้นที่ปากแม่น้ำและชายฝั่งทะเลญี่ปุ่นในเขตอารยา นำเสนอศิลปะจัดวางที่ให้ความสำคัญต่อการตรวจสอบความจริงทางนิเวศวิทยา ที่ปรากฏจากศิลปวัตถุ ซากปรักหักพังของสิ่งของต่างๆ ที่เก็บรวบรวมขณะเดินสำรวจ และนำมาเสนอในบริบททางศิลปะ

นิทรรศการนี้ต้องการนำเสนอภูมิศาสตร์กายภาพท้องถิ่นของเมืองชนบทในญี่ปุ่นต่อผู้ชมชาวไทยผ่านผลงานของศิลปินที่อาศัยอยู่ในพื้นที่ที่พวกเขาเผชิญกับภูมิทัศน์และสภาพแวดล้อมที่ค่อยๆเปลี่ยนแปลงของบริเวณชายฝั่งทะเลญี่ปุ่นและเมื่อมองจากมุมมองของศิลปินในฐานะผู้อยู่อาศัย พวกเขาต่างจินตนาการถึงปรากฏการณ์ทางนิเวศวิทยา ตลอดจนปัญหาด้านอื่นๆที่เกิดขึ้นในปัจจุบันผ่านบริบทของศิลปะร่วมสมัย ทางผู้จัดนิทรรศการหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าประสบการณ์การชมผลงานในนิทรรศการนี้จะช่วยขยายโลกทัศน์ของผู้ชมชาวไทยที่มีต่อเมืองชนบทญี่ปุ่น อีกทั้งหวังว่านัยสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมของท้องถิ่นในญี่ปุ่นค่อยๆส่งผ่านสู่ประเทศไทยในแง่ภูมิทัศน์ของเมือง
