A photographic dialogue between
Manit Sriwanichpoom & Rammy Narula

By coincidence, 2 photographers began their serious street photography at Hua Lamphong Railway Station: Manit Sriwanichpoom in 1985 and Rammy Narula in 2015, or 30 years apart.
Night and day, Manit roamed Thailand’s oldest railway station with a camera, from the ticketing hall to the platforms, recording old women, monks, novices, young men seeking their fortune, junkies, gamblers, the homeless. Perhaps because they are in black and white, Manit’s Hua Lamphong series displays a heavy atmosphere of exhaustion and despair, as if these passengers are trapped in limbo at the station, waiting for a train that will never come.
By contrast, Rammy planted himself on platform #10, using the train carriages as his backdrop, like a stage setting for dramas enacted by anonymous players. Rammy deliberately pressed the shutter when the passengers’ backs are turned to him or as they gazed absentmindedly elsewhere, thereby reducing their individuality to its bare essentials, leaving room for the viewers to add their own narrative. Rammy’s atmospheric Hua Lamphong is thus steeped with beauty and emotional intensity, like still frames from a film noir thriller.
Manit Sriwanichpoom (b. 1961) is a long-established photographer, his work widely exhibited in numerous international contemporary photography festivals and collected by many prominent art museums of the world. This is the first exhibition of his ‘Hua Lamphong’ series.
Rammy Narula (b. 1980) is a fast-rising star of the new generation of Thai street photography, garnering accolades for his work of colourful intensity and poetic power, which have been invited to many international photography festivals. For this former financier, business graduate of Assumption University, his Hua Lamphong series, titled ‘Platform 10’, announces his arrival as a photographic artist.

ช่างเป็นความบังเอิญเมื่อสองช่างภาพเริ่มงานถ่ายรูปแนวสตรีท (Street photography) อย่างจริงจังที่ “หัวลำโพง”; มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ เมื่อปี 2528 ส่วน แรมมี่ นารูลา เมื่อปี 2558 - หรือห่างกัน 30 ปี
มานิตถือกล้องฟิล์มเดินสำรวจถ่ายภาพไปรอบๆ สถานีรถไฟฟ้าเก่าแก่แห่งแรกของไทย จากบริเวณโถงขายตั๋วไปจนสุดชานชาลา ทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน บันทึกรูปแม่เฒ่า พระ เณร หนุ่มนักแสวงโชค นักพนัน คนไร้บ้าน จนถึงขี้ยา อาจเป็นเพราะภาพขาว-ดำจึงทำให้ผลงานชุดนี้ของมานิตมีบรรยากาศหนักหน่วง เหนื่อยล้า และชวนหดหู่ ราวกับผู้โดยสารในภาพติดค้างอยู่ในสถานี หรือไม่ก็กำลังรอคอยรถไฟที่ไม่เคยมาถึง
ตรงข้าม, แรมมี่ เลือกปักหลักถ่ายภาพอยู่ตรงชานชาลา หมายเลข 10 เขาอาศัยตัวโบกี้รถไฟเป็นฉากหลังเหมือนเวทีละคร และจงใจบีบบังคับให้แสงแดดส่องสว่างมาจากด้านบนเหนือหลังคาโบกี้รถไฟ จากนั้นก็ปล่อยให้ผู้โดยสารเดินเข้ามาในเฟรมของภาพ ราวกับกำลังดูละครโดยนักแสดงนิรนาม แรมมี่บรรจงกดชัตเตอร์กล้องดิจิตัลในมือในจังหวะที่ผู้โดยสารหันหลังให้กล้องหรือเหม่อมองไปทางอื่น เพื่อลดทอนอัตลักษณ์ให้เหลือเท่าที่จำเป็นและเปิดพื้นที่ให้ผู้ชมภาพเติมแต่งเรื่องราวที่เหลือเอาเอง หัวลำโพงของแรมมี่จึงเต็มไปด้วยบรรยากาศ งดงาม และมีอารมณ์เข้มข้นแบบภาพนิ่งจากหนังนัวร์ (Film Noir) ที่น่าระทึกใจ
มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ (เกิด 2504) ทำงานถ่ายภาพมาอย่างยาวนาน ผลงานของเขาได้รับการคัดเลือกแสดงในเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยและเทศกาลภาพถ่ายนานาชาติมากมาย และยังได้รับการสะสมในพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะสำคัญๆของโลกหลายแห่ง นับเป็นครั้งแรกที่เขานำผลงานชุด “หัวลำโพง” ออกแสดง
แรมมี่ นารูลา (เกิด 2523) ช่างภาพแนวสตรีทรุ่นใหม่ของไทย ที่กำลังมาแรงด้วยผลงานที่มีเอกลักษณ์อัดแน่นด้วยสีสันเข้มข้น ทั้งมีความเป็นกวีอย่างที่ภาพถ่ายพึงกระทำได้ ผลงานของเขาได้รับเชิญให้เข้าร่วมแสดงในเทศกาลภาพถ่ายนานาชาติหลายแห่ง ผลงานหัวลำโพงของเขาในชื่อ “ชานชาลา 10” (Platform 10) จัดเป็นผลงานโดดเด่นและแจ้งเกิดให้แก่อดีตนักการเงิน ผู้จบปริญญาตรีด้านการบริหารธุรกิจ จากมหาวิทยาลัยอัสสัมชัญ
