นิทรรศการนี้เป็นการแสดงเดี่ยวครั้งที่สามในกรุงเทพฯของผม

นิทรรศการนี้เกิดขึ้นในบรรยากาศที่ติดขัดระหว่างการประกาศแผนการณ์ต่อต้าน ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาที่จุดมุ่งหมายดั้งเดิมถูกปรับเปลี่ยนไปอย่างกระอักกระอ่วน สภาวะหลังอาหรับสปริง (Post-Arab/Post Spring) เกี่ยวเนื่องกับ neo-retro Occupy Movementsในขณะนั้นภายในระบบของแกลเลอรี่เองก็เห็นว่าพาราฟิคชัน (para-fictions) ภาวะไฮเปอร์ของสุนทรียศาสตร์เกี่ยวเนื่อง (Hyperrelational Aesthetics) นั้นสะท้อนเข้ากับการพังทลายของเศรษฐกิจเสรีนิยมใหม่ ที่กำลังขับเคลื่อนให้เกิดการไม่ยอมรับของพลเมือง ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นความล้มเหลวที่จำเป็น เพื่อให้เราสามารถเดินหน้าเข้าสู่โลกที่มีทัศนติที่ถูกต้องและมีความสามารถปรับประเมินเป้าหมายอย่างตรงประเด็น

ณ 338 โอไอดาแกลเลอรี่ ผมพยายามสร้างสถานการณ์เพื่อรวบรวมส่วนประกอบเล็กๆน้อยๆจากช่วงเวลาร่วมของพวกเราเข้าด้วยกัน เพื่อตัดทอน ทำลายภาพลักษณ์ของสถานภาพตามกระแสปัจจุบัน หรือสุนทรียภาพของความเป็นซูเปอร์มาร์เก็ต ขบวนการตัดทอนเป็นวิธีการที่มีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดของกิจกรรมของกลุ่มอาว็อง-การ์ด ที่ยังคงหลงเหลืออยู่ ผมสนใจในวิถีที่เราทุกคนคงบทบาทของทั้งการเป็นผู้ดำเนินเรื่องราวและผู้ต่อต้านภายใต้การแผ่เงาของศตวรรษที่ยี่สิบตอนต้น ในขณะที่ความรู้สึกต่อต้านเผด็จการยังคงเป็นแรงที่ขับเคลื่อนกระแสท้องถิ่นของเรา สภาพการณ์นี้ตั้งค้านอยู่บนฉากที่กำลังเปลี่ยนแปลง เป็นภาพของการโอนถ่ายรูปสัญลักษณ์ซึ่งเป็นผลจากอุดมการณ์ประชาธิปไตยตะวันตก ผมสงสัยว่าความสามารถในการเข้าถึงความจริงนั้นถูกเพิ่มพูนขึ้นหรือลดทอนลงเมื่อเราอยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ท่วมท้นและถูกกระตุ้นจนเกินพิกัดเช่นนี้

เรามีความคาดหวังต่องานศิลปะ เพราะศิลปะเคยเป็นตัวบ่งชี้ความสำเร็จอันสูงส่งและความผิดพลาดในการเป็นมนุษย์
คำถามที่มีอยู่คือ ศิลปะยังสามารถที่จะช่วยให้เราทำความเข้าใจกับสถานการณ์ปัจจุบันได้อยู่หรือไม่

เดนนิส บอล์ค เป็นอาจารย์ ศิลปิน นักเขียนบทความ และนักเขียนบทละคร เริ่มบทบาทตั้งแต่ช่วงปลายปี 1980 เขาเป็นหัวหน้าสาขาวิชาคอมพิวเตอร์กราฟิกส์และมัลติมีเดียของมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ บอล์คเคยบรรยายและสอนในประเทศริมอ่าวอาระเบีย Università IUAV di Venezia มหาวิทยาลัยเยล และมหาวิทยาลัยแคลิฟอร์เนีย ลอสแอนเจลิส บอล์คแสดงนิทรรศการอย่างกว้างขวาง รวมถึงนิทรรศการสำรวจของมหาวิทยาลัยวิสคอนซิน มิลวอกี (2009) สิ่งพิมพ์: particles + waves with plausibility (2006), Colin de Land, American Fine Arts (2008) and Dennis Balk/1890-2090 (2010)

Artist's Statement
This is the third, solo exhibition of my work in Bangkok. 

This exhibition takes place during this awkward time of pronounced counter strategies. A time when primary motives are replaced by uncomfortable adjustments. The Post-Arab /Post Spring reflects the neo-retro Occupy Movements, and within the gallery networks the para-fictions in Hyperrelational Aesthetics reflect the collapse of the neoliberal economies which allow and actively entertain a variety of civil intolerance now seen as the necessary failures we require to move us all closer to a world of corrected insights and modified and down-scaled goal seeking.

Here in this Gallery, 338 OIDA, I've tried to create a situation where INsignificant components of our shared contemporary moment are brought together to serve as a further canceling out or fashionable defacement of status quo or supermarket aesthetics. This canceling out process is still the optimum process of the still-lingering avant gardists’ activity. I am interested in the ways we all maintain the roles of protagonists and antagonists as shadows of earlier twentieth century, anti-fascist sentiments continue to animate our trending vernaculars. All of this against the shifting backdrop of pronounced, iconographic migration brought on by the continuing diasporas of western, democratic idealism. I wonder if our access to clarity is enhanced or further challenged in such an oversaturated, over stimulated environment? 

We have expectations of the work of art—it previously illuminated the sublime achievements and failures of the human condition. The question is, can art continue to assist in deciphering the contemporary moment?

Dennis Balk is an educator, visual artist, writer and playwright active since the late 1980s. He is Chairperson of the Computer Graphics/ Multimedia Department at Bangkok University International. Balk has lectured and taught in the Arabian Gulf, at Università IUAV di Venezia, Yale University, and the University of California at Los Angeles. Balk exhibits widely, including a survey at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2009). Publications include particles + waves with plausibility (2006), Colin de Land, American Fine Arts (2008) and Dennis Balk/1890-2090 (2010).
