นิทรรศการภาพถ่าย "ยังอยู่ : YANG YU (Still Here)" ผลงานโดย ลีโอ เกาเวน (Leo Gauvain) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 2 – 24 กุมภาพันธ์ 2562 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันเสาร์ที่ 2 กุมภาพันธ์ 2562 เวลา 18.00 น. ณ แกลเลอรี่ โอเอซิส : Galerie Oasis

ราวกับรู้ว่าความตายปัจจุบันทันด่วนอย่างไร้เหตุผลกำลังมา ศิลปินหน้าใหม่ อนาคตสดใส ลูกครึ่งไทย-อังกฤษ ลีโอ ‘สิงโต’ เกาเวน ซึ่งเกิดและโตในเมืองไทย ตั้งชื่อภาพถ่ายชุดสุดท้ายของเขาว่า ‘ยังอยู่’ ราวกับจะบอกว่า ‘อัตมัน’ ยังอยู่เสมอและความตายเป็นเพียงการล่มสลายของร่าง ที่ถูกบดขยี้โดยความสะเพร่าของคนสร้างตึกสูงขณะที่เขาเดินผ่านโครงการคอนโดหรูในซอยสายน้ำผึ้ง สุขุมวิท 22 ภาพเหมือนฝันแห่งชุด ‘ยังอยู่’ ยังคงอยู่ให้เรารู้สึกเสียดายในอนาคตที่เขาไม่มีโอกาสจะมี ด้วยศักยภาพที่มากล้น: ทั้งความละเอียดอ่อนอันแยบยล ผ่านสายตาที่อ่อนโยน และเห็นอกเห็นใจ ทั้งความเศร้าสร้อยที่จริงใจ ไม่ใช่เพียงโพสท่าหรือตามธรรมเนียม และสัญชาตญาณอันแม่นยำที่เขามีในการใช้รูปทรงและพื้นผิว ‘ตัวฉัน’ ยังอยู่ – อัตมัน ยังอยู่เสมอ

ช่างภาพโฆษณารุ่นใหญ่ แพทริก ‘กุ้ง’ เกาเวน พูดถึงลูกชายคนโตคนนี้ว่า : “ลีโอเป็นนักสร้างสรรค์ นักคิดค้น นักทฤษฎีความรู้...ปรัชญาว่าด้วยธรรมชาติขององค์ความรู้, การให้เหตุผล และการมีเหตุมีผลของความเชื่อ... แน่นอนว่าจิตวิญญาณและอุดมคติของลีโอจะยังคงปรากฏอยู่บนผลงานของเขาตลอดไป”

ลีโอ ‘สิงโต’ เกาเวน เคยกล่าวว่า “ผลงานของผมเกิดขึ้นจากปัญหาส่วนตัว – ความไม่สามารถที่จะสื่อสารและพูดอธิบายความคิดของผมเองให้ถูกต้อง ผลจากการพยายามแสดงออกแบบดิบๆ โดยมีตัวเองเป็นศูนย์กลาง เต็มไปด้วยอารมณ์มนุษย์ดังกล่าว ทำให้ผมพบว่าผลงานเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่เรื่องการสื่อสารให้ถูกต้อง แต่มันคือการสื่อสารอีกแบบหนึ่ง”

สำเร็จปริญญาตรีเกียรตินิยมในปี 2559 จากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปะเบิร์นเมาธ์ อังกฤษ ลีโอ ‘สิงโต’ เกาเวน มุ่งมั่นที่จะยึดอาชีพด้านสิ่งพิมพ์, ภัณฑารักษ์, ภาพถ่าย และงานออกแบบ ก่อนที่จะพบโศกนาฏกรรมอันน่าเศร้าเพียงหนึ่งปีต่อมาด้วยวัยเพียง 23 เท่านั้น โดยเขาเพิ่งเริ่มธุรกิจงานออกแบบและสิ่งพิมพ์ในชื่อ ‘the button, press’.

As if he knew that sudden, senseless death was coming, promising young British-Thai artist Leo ‘Singto’ Gauvain, Bangkok born and bred, titled his last series of photographs ‘Yang Yu’—Thai for “Still Here”. As if to say that ‘I’ am always and death is only of the body, crushed by a highrise builder’s carelessness as he walked past a Sukhumvit construction site. The dreamlike photographs of ‘Yang Yu’ remains, reminding us forever of his potential: his acute sensitivity and gentle sympathetic gaze; the sincere, unsentimental melancholy; his instinct for profoundly satisfying form and texture. ‘I’ am always.

Photographer Patrick ‘Shrimp’ Gauvain says of his son: “Leo was a creator, innovator and epistemologist... the philosophy of the nature of knowledge, justification, and the rationality of belief… his soul, spirit and ideological beliefs will surely live on in his work.”

Leo ‘Singto’ Gauvain: "The body of work I create stems from a personal issue – my inability to accurately communicate and verbalise my thoughts. In my attempt to express raw, subjective, human emotion, I found that this work isn’t about accurate communication but instead another way to communicate."

Newly graduated with honours in July 2016 from the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), Leo ‘Singto’ Gauvain pursued a career in publishing, curating, photography and design. Before his tragic and untimely death just over a year later at the age of 23, he started his first design/publishing business called ‘the button, press”.
