นิทรรศการศิลปะ "NEW OLD CITY" ผลงานโดย ชินยา อะกูทากาวา (Shinya Akutagawa) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม - 13 ตุลาคม 2561 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันศุกร์ที่ 24 สิงหาคม 2561 เวลา 19.00 น. ณ WTF Gallery and Cafe

WTF แกลลอรี่โดยการสนับสนุนโดยเจแปนฟาวน์เดชั่น กรุงเทพฯ มีความยินดีขอเชิญท่านเข้าร่วมงานเปิดนิทรรศการศิลปะ NEW OLD CITY –The Permanent Temporary Mound โดยศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่น ชินยา อะกูทากาวา ในวันศุกร์ที่ 24 สิงหาคม 2561 เวลา 19.00 น.

นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ศิลปินจำลองสร้างลิฟท์ขึ้นในแกลลอรี่เพื่อนำเสนอและเปรียบเทียบความคิดของโลกยูโทเปีย (Utopia จากกรีก) และไตรภูมิ (โลก 3 ภพของไทย) เพื่อสร้างสถานที่พิเศษ (Exceptional places จากสมัยปัจจุบัน) โดยจะเป็นงานศิลปะที่มีปฎิส้มพันธ์กับคนดู นิทรรศการครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อตั้งคำถามในการทำความเข้าใจกับวัฒนธรรม มุมมองไหนที่ศิลปะควรจะถูกนำเสนออย่างไม่ต้องคำนึงถึงเชื้อชาติหรือที่มา?

งานจัดวางครั้งนี้นำเสนอที่ที่ไม่มีอยู่จริง (non places ลิฟท์ที่จะนำไปยังโลกสมัยใหม่ หรือยูโทเปีย) ที่ผู้ชมจะได้เห็นสถานที่พิเศษจากแนวความคิดของไตรภูมิ หรือโลกสามภพ

ไตรภูมิหรือสามพิภพถูกเขียนขึ้นครั้งแรกในสมัยพระร่วง ศตวรรษที่ 14 ถือเป็นงานวรรณกรรมงานแรกที่เขียนโดยคนไทย และถือว่าเป็นเอกลักษณ์และวัฒนธรรมที่สำคัญอย่างมากของไทย ถึงแม้ว่าแนวความคิดเรื่องต่างพิภพจะไม่สอดคล้องกับวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ แต่ปรัชญาทางแนวความคิดนี้ก็ทำให้นักคิดสมัยใหม่ประหลาดใจได้ คล้ายกับการนั่งสมาธิที่ผู้ปฎิบัติจะสามารถเข้าถึงภาวะเข้าญาณ หรือความว่างเปล่าอย่างแท้จริง ที่สันนิษฐานว่ายังมีดินแดนเบื้องบนมากไปกว่านั้น แต่ไม่มีใครสามารถอธิบายมันได้ื เพราะผู้ที่บรรลุปรินิพพานไม่กลับมาบนโลกอีกเพื่อเล่าเรื่องดังกล่าวได้

ศาสตร์ของการเขียนแผนที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทยในศตวรรษที่ 15 มีอิทธิพลทั้งในด้านภูมิศาสตร์ และเอกลักษณ์ของความเป็นชาติไทย ถึงกระนั้นภูมิศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ก็ยังไม่สามารถทำความเข้าใจกับความลึกลับของแผนที่โบราณสมัยอยุธยาที่มีการจารึกภูเขาทองจากเรื่องไตรภูมิได้

ลิฟท์ที่ถูกจำลองขึ้นในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของโลกสมัยใหม่ที่มีอยู่ทุกที่ สำหรับชีวิตเมืองนั้นมันจะต้องทำหน้าที่ได้อย่างสมบูรณ์ตลอดเวลา เพราะฟังค์ชั่นการทำงานคือสี่งที่จำเป็นที่สุดในสภาวะความเป็นเมือง ที่จะไม่ประเด็นทางวัฒนธรรมหากลิฟท์เสียหรือทำงานในรูปแบบที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะ อย่างไรก็ตามเมื่อผู้ชมได้เข้าไปอยู่ในลิฟท์ที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์ มันจะกลายเป็นเครื่องมือนำพาเราไปยังความคิดแบบใหม่ เป็นการตีความสังคมปัจจุบัน ด้านในของลิฟท์คือสถานที่ที่ทำให้ทุกสิ่งหลอมเป็นสื่งเดียว ที่ผู้ชมทุกคนสามารถใช้เวลาอยู่ในนั้นได้นานอย่างไม่ต้องสนใจที่ไปที่มาฐานะทางส้งคม ในขณะเดียวกันผู้ใช้ลิฟท์ต้องมีมารยาททางวัฒนธรรม เพื่อจะอยู่ร่วมกับผู้อื่นในพื้นที่แคบที่นั้นเป็นเวลาชั่วคราวให้ได้ โดยทุกคนจะต้องปลดวางเอกลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมของตัวเองออกให้หมด

ชินยา อะกูทากาวา จบการศึกษาจาก Tokyo University of Art เป็นศิลปินที่ทำงานด้านวิจัยและใช้สื่อหลายประเภทในงานศิลปะของขา ชินยาสนใจศึกษาสภาวะเมืองต่างๆ และค้นหาประวัติศาสตร์ของแต่ละเมืองจากกิจกรรมปกติของคนเมืองและการอ้างอิงทางประวัติศาสตร์ของเมืองนั้นๆ มุ่งประเด็นไปที่สภาวะทางวัฒนธรรมด้วยมุมมองใหม่ที่อิงความเป็นจริง เขาสร้างกรอบทางความคิดทั้งหมดออกมาในรูปแบบศิลปะการจัดวางที่มีการปฎิส้มพันธ์กับคนดู งานของชินยามักจะเป็น interactive หรือ participatory art โดยใช้เทคนิคการวาด animation และเสียงผ่าน Rasberry Pi (python) และ interactive 3D-CD ที่ใช้เคนิคเดียวกับการสร้างเกมส์คอมพิวเตอร์ การอุปกรณ์ง่ายๆที่ทำขึ้นเอง ในปี 2009 ชินยาได้ทำวิจัยที่ประเทศอัลจีเลีย แต่หลังจากนั้นเขาได้มุ่งความสนใจมากที่เมืองที่เริ่มเติบโตขึ้น อาทิเช่นกรุงเทพ, สุราบายา, วรอคลอ และกรุงจาร์กาต้า ในปี 2012 เขาเริ่มทำงานวิจัยทางและนิทรรศการศิลปะในภูมิภาคเอเชียอาคเนย์เป็นหลัก โดยได้เข้าศึกษาที่จุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย กรุงเทพ ในด้านภูมิภาคเอเชียอาคเนย์ และทำงานที่ Graduate School of Transdisciplinary Arts ทางด้านสภาวะเมืองในเมือง Akita ประเทศญี่ปุ่น

WTF Gallery in with support from The Japan Foundation Bangkok are delighted to invite you to a an exhibition “NEW OLD CITY –The Permanent Temporary Mound Exhibition by Shinya Akutagawa” at WTF Gallery and Café on Friday 24 August 2018.

Mr Akutagawa will install an elevator as ‘Non-places’ (‘Utopia’ in Greek language) with Trai Phum (Three Worlds in Thai language) as ‘Exceptional Places (out of modernity)’ as an interactive installation. His work will raise the question - how can we see culture, from which perspective the arts should be shown regardless of the nationality?

The installation, will present non-places (elevator, hyper-modernity or utopia) where the audience is expected to see exceptional places (the idea of Trai Phum) from the non-places.

Three Worlds of King Ruang (Trai Phum) written in 14th century is the first truly literary work of a Thai author. It is considered essential for considering identity and culture in Thailand. While the conception of ‘world’ within the book doesn’t correspond to modern science, its philosophy will amaze contemporary thinkers. Similar to meditation practitioners who reach the stage of ‘all perception and non-perception’ or ‘nothingness’, there is still a realm above and beyond this that cannot be described because those who reach Nibbāna do not return to tell us.

Modern cartography gave shape to Thailand since the 15th century, influencing not only geography but also Thai people’s identity as nation state. Yet this geography of modernity still could not swallow and digest the mysteries of ancient maps of Ayutthaya showing the Golden mountain, Trai Phum.

The Elevator is one of the symbols of hyper-modernity located everywhere. In urban life, its function ‘must’ be perfect. As functionality is the ultimate requirement for the urban condition, there is no cultural aspect if an elevator is out of order or operates in a unique manner. However, if an audience is on a ‘symbolic’ elevator, it can be a device for rethinking contemporary society. Inside an elevator is a homogenized "non-place" where one spends significant time regardless of social status. At the same time, on the elevator, passengers who must have their respective ‘culture’ stay with others temporarily, all of them deprived of their cultural identity.

Shinya Akutagawa, graduated from Tokyo University of the Art, is a project & research based cross-disciplinary artist. He examines urban & local cities and finds a string of history from daily basis activities and old references, considers the condition of culture with a new realistic point of view, conceptualizes these phenomena as participatory art, installation with active audiences. On the matter of technique, his projects are often involved with interactive and participatory art using interactive drawing animation & sound run by Raspberry Pi (python), interactive 3D-CG driven by game engine (blender), physical computing, D.I.Y devices. After a research in Africa (Algeria) in 2009, his interest has been shifted to emerging and alternative cities like Bangkok, Surabaya, Wroclaw, Jakarta. Since 2012 he’s having research based art project and exhibition mainly in Southeast Asia, studying in Chulalongkorn University majored in Southeast Asian Studies in Bangkok, Thailand and working in Graduate School of Transdisciplinary Arts majored in Urban study in Akita, Japan.
