Lucy Sarneel considers a jewel as an object with a high concentration of focus and energy, as “slow art” in a fast world”Her jewels arise from the field of tension between the inspiring past and the untouchable present that is created by traditions and spiritual and symbolic values.In an increasingly commercial world, wherever fewer objects are made in which personal passion plays a role, it is important to Lucy Sarneel that her work holds that deeper strength, reaching further than outward appearance.

For some time her work has developed towards the idea of a jewel considered as a power- object and patron, trying to catch a kind of “cultivated primitivism” as a counterpart of the high-tech, efficient and mass-oriented world we live in.The “carrying material“ of her work is zinc which represents the blue-grey sky and sea, the color of the subconscious, dreaming away in the distance, the reassuring, domestic world of rain pipes, buckets and washtubs, architectural 'jewels' like towers and dormer windows in old European cities and the protective quality preventing steel rust.Lucy Sarneel uses familiar symbols for love, protection and handcrafts, as well as forms relating to forgotten traditions, proverbs, popular motifs and themes from folklore. She's looking for fields of tension in form, idea and material as a metaphor for life in the quest for balance between forces that influence us.
