นิทรรศการภาพถ่าย “ช่างภาพไทยที่โลกลืม” ผลงานโดย พุทธทาส ภิกขุ (Buddhadasa Bhikku), ม.ล.ต้อย ชุมสาย (Mom Luang Toy Xoomsai), เลี่ยงอิ้ว (Liang Ewe), แสงจันทร์ ลิ่มโลหะกุล (Saengjun Limlohakul), เอส. เอช. ลิม (S.H. Lim), รงค์ วงษ์สวรรค์ (Rong Wong-savun) และ พรศักดิ์ ศักดิ์แดนไพร (Pornsak Sakdaenprai) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 19 กันยายน - 31 ตุลาคม 2558 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันเสาร์ที่ 19 กันยายน 2558 เวลา 18.00 น. ณ หอศิลปมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ วิทยาเขตกล้วยน้ำไท

“ไทยเราไม่มีช่างภาพระดับมาสเตอร์ให้ศึกษาเลยหรือ?” มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ศิลปินและอาจารย์พิเศษด้านภาพถ่ายตั้งคำถามนี้กับตัวเอง เพราะเมื่อต้องสอนหนังสือก็มีแต่ผลงานช่างภาพมาสเตอร์ของตะวันตกให้เรียนเท่านั้น ส่วนของไทยยังไม่มีตำราที่ศึกษาอย่างจริงจัง และนี่คือเหตุผลให้เขาเริ่มโครงการค้นหาครูภาพถ่ายไทยเมื่อปี 2554
“ช่างภาพไทยที่โลกลืม” คือหยาดเหงื่อแรงงานของมานิต ที่ค้นคว้ารวบรวมเอาผลงานภาพถ่ายอันหลากหลายทั้งเนื้อหาและสไตล์ของช่างภาพไทยฝีมือชั้นครูจำนวน 7 ท่านมานำเสนอให้ชมกัน โดยผลงานเหล่านี้ของบางท่านไม่เคยเผยแพร่ที่ใดมาก่อน ช่างภาพบางท่านเป็นพระนักปราชญ์ผู้มีชื่อเสียง เช่น พุทธทาส ผู้ใช้ภาพถ่ายเป็นเครื่องมือสื่อธรรมะ บางท่านเป็นที่รู้จักในฐานะนักเขียนชื่อดังมากกว่าช่างภาพ เช่น ‘รงค์ วงษ์สวรรค์ และ ม.ล.ต้อย ชุมสาย (ผู้เป็นอาจารย์สอนถ่ายภาพให้ ‘รงค์) บางท่านเมื่อเปิดร้านถ่ายรูปยังใช้แสงแดดในการอัดภาพ เช่น พรศักดิ์ ศักดิ์แดนไพร เพราะพิมายในปี 2502 ยังไม่มีไฟฟ้าใช้
เทศกาลโฟโต้บางกอก ร่วมกับ หอศิลปะมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ และคัดมันดู โฟโต้ แกลเลอรี่ มีความภูมิใจในการมีส่วนร่วมสนับสนุนโครงการบันทึกประวัติศาสตร์ภาพถ่ายไทย เพื่อเป็นองค์ความรู้อันเป็นประโยชน์และเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่ผู้ชมทั่วไป

“Are there no Thai masters in photography for us to study at all?” wondered Manit Sriwanichpoom, photo-artist and special photography lecturer. As he researched lessons for his students, he could only find the work of Western masters for them to learn from. There were no serious texts on Thai photography. This is his motivation for initiating, in 2011, the project to seek out Thai masters of photography.
‘Rediscovering Forgotten Thai Masters of Photography’ is the fruit of many years of Manit’s labour of love, to seek out and gather the work of seven Thai masters of photography, whose work vary greatly in style and substance. Some of this work has never been shown to the public before. One of them, Buddhadasa, is a revered sage and monk who used photography as a medium for the Buddha’s teachings. Two are better known as celebrated writers, Rong Wong-savun and M.L. Toy Xoomsai (who had taught Rong photography). One of them, Pornsak Sakdaenprai, still had to rely on sunlight for printing and enlarging when he opened his photo studio because, in 1959, his remote hometown in Northeast Thailand had not yet entered the age of electricity.
Photo Bangkok Festival, in concert with the Bangkok University Gallery (BUG) and Kathmandu Photo Gallery, is proud to play a part in supporting this project to record Thai photographic history, as a valuable and inspiring resource for the general public.
