Exhibition of Cambodian-American artist, You Are From My Past Life: Sopheak Sam expands upon the forgotten history of Cambodian (Khmer) refugees along the Thai border—to bring viewers into sites of return and reincarnation, memory and embodiment, horizons and vanishing points.

นิทรรศการของศิลปินชาวกัมพูชาที่เติบโตในอเมริกา “แต่ปางก่อน: สุภักตร์ ส้ม” เล่าถึงประวัติศาสตร์ที่ถูกลืมของผู้ลี้ภัยชากัมพูชา(เขมร) ที่อยู่ตามแนวชายแดนไทย นิทรรศการพาผู้ชมเข้าไปสู่สถานที่การกลับมาและการเกิดใหม่ ความทรงจำและการมีตัวตน และจุดที่สูญหายไปบนขอบฟ้า

About the artist
Sopheak Sam (b. 1989 in Thailand; lives and works in the United States) is a multi-disciplinary Cambodian-American artist exploring affect from postwar intimacies. Their process draws on historic and aesthetic materiality to trouble the ways in which we memorialize the past. Often tracing how queerness resurfaces in Khmer subjecthood, their work is a sensuous and often spatial intervention of desire and memory. Sam was the recipient of an American Fulbright Research Grant to Thailand from 2022 to ’23 in which they returned to Khao-I-Dang refugee camp for the first time during that period. Sam holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio for Interrelated Media from MassArt, and is currently completing their graduate studies at Cornell University. They grew up in Massachusetts and are the second-youngest of nine siblings.
