--‘Pattani Crossover’ เพื่อค้นหาความหมายของความแตกต่างของคนจังหวัดใต้สุดของสองชาติ--

จากมิตรภาพจากสองศิลปินต่างเชื้อชาติ ต่างภาษาและต่างแขนงที่มาพานพบกัน ณ จุดหนึ่งของชีวิต ณ สถานที่แห่งหนึ่ง ความสัมพันธ์งอกงามถึงแม้ว่าความแตกต่างทางภาษาจะยิ่งใหญ่ ทั้งคู่ก้าวข้ามแล้ววันหนึ่ง เมื่อสองศิลปินที่ต่างก็มีดำเนินชีวิต สร้างสรรค์ผลงานในรูปแบบของตนเองก็ตัดสินใจที่จะนำความแตกต่างไร้เส้นขีดขนานให้ออกสู่สายตาของผู้คนภายนอกผ่านงานศิลปะ

ตะวัน วัตุยาก้าวเท้าออกนอกประเทศเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อไปเยี่ยมเยือนเพื่อสนิทต่างชาติ แดเนี่ยล ศิลปินชาวสวิสที่ย้ายถิ่นฐานมาอยู่ ณ เกาะโอกินาวา เกาะใต้สุดของประเทศญี่ปุ่น เมื่อสิบปีที่แล้ว ความประทับใจและผูกพันกับชาวญี่ปุ่นพื้นถิ่นโอกินาวา วัฒนธรรมในแบบฉบับโอกินาวาที่คุณจะไม่มีวันเห็นที่ไหนในญี่ปุ่น ความผูกพันเกิดขึ้นอย่างประหลาดระหว่างตะวันกับชาวพื้นเมืองโอกินาวา เขาท่องเดินไปตามมุมต่างๆของเกาะและเริ่มต้นวาดภาพพอร์เทรตผู้คนเหล่านั้น มีทั้งชาวประมง นักเรียน คนหนุ่มสาว คนชราอายุร้อยปี ในอิริยบถต่างๆ ด้วยความตื่นตาตื่นใจ

ความประทับใจในมิตรภาพบนความแตกต่างระหว่างตะวันกับแดเนี่ยล และความประทับใจที่มีต่อความแตกต่างระหว่างคนญี่ปุ่นทั่วไปกับคนญี่ปุ่นเชื้อสายโอกินาวา นำมาซึ่งความคิดของทั้งสองที่ต้องการสร้างงานศิลปะคู่กัน เป็นงาน Duo Exhibition และนั่นจึงกลายเป็นที่มาของการเดินทางอีกครั้งของแดเนี่ยล ครั้งนี้เพื่อมาพบตะวันและพากันเดินทางไปยัง ปัตตานี หนึ่งในสามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้สุดของประเทศไทย

ที่ปัตตานี ทั้งแดเนี่ยลและตะวันได้ค้นพบกับความงามของความแตกต่าง มองเผินๆอาจแตกต่างกันที่ภาษาและที่ตั้ง ศาสนา แต่ในความต่างนั้น ทั้งคู่ได้พบกับความบริสุทธิ์และอารยะแห่งปัตตานี วิถีแบบไทยที่แตกต่างจากผู้คนในจังหวัดอื่นๆของไทยอย่างสิ้นเชิงเฉกเช่นเดียวกับที่คนโอกินาวาแตกต่างจากชาวญี่ปุ่นทั่วไป ร่องรอยชีวิตและความเปลี่ยนผ่านทางสังคมโลกไม่สามารถทำลายสายใยทางวัฒนธรรมของชาวใต้สุดของทั้งสองประเทศ แต่ความงามที่สามารถมาบรรจบกันท่ามกลางความแตกต่างนั้นมีอยู่

ทั้งคู่ได้เลือกที่จะใช้เทคนิคการทำงานศิลปะในรูปแบบเฉพาะทางของตนเอง เพื่อสร้างจุดร่วมและสะท้อนความหมายของความสวยงามบนความแตกต่างที่เหมือนกัน

เกี่ยวกับ ตะวัน วัตุยา
ตะวัน วัตุยา เกิดที่กรุงเทพฯ เมื่อปี พศ 2516 จบการศึกษาจากคณะจิตรกรรม มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ตะวันเป็นศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่มีชื่อเสียงในฝีมือการใช้เทคนิคในการวาดภาพสีน้ำที่ไม่เหมือนใครและการแสดงออกทางความคิดเป็นศิลปะเชิงวิพากษ์และเสียดสีสังคม เขาเลือกใช้เทคนิคสีน้ำในการทำงานศิลปะเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ผลงานของเขาสะท้อนความเป็นพลวัตของสังคมไทยและการค้นคว้าหาความหมายของความแตกต่างของผู้คนในวัฒนธรรมแบบไทยๆที่ถูกบดบังด้วยกำแพงที่ทึบหนาเต็มไปด้วยความซับซ้อนยากจะหยั่งถึง
การวาดภาพสีน้ำของตะวันนั้นงดงามราวบทกวี แต่ก็เต็มไปสาระทางความคิด ที่สะท้อนความคิดเชิงวิพากษ์สังคมให้เห็นถึงความหยาบหนาอันจริงแท้ของมนุษย์ภายใต้เปลือกสวยงาม ร่ำร้องหาศีลธรรมอันดีงาม กลับเต็มไปด้วยจิตพร้อมแก่งแย่ง คดโกง ความมือถือสากปากถือศีลของผู้คนในสังคมในยุคโลกาภิวัฒน์

ในช่วงสิบปีหลังของชีวิตของตะวัน ที่ออกแสวงหาประสบการณ์จากการเดินทางไปร่วมทำงานศิลปะและได้รับโอกาสเข้าร่วมแสดงผลงานเดี่ยวและงานแสดงกลุ่มร่วมกับศิลปินชั้นนำหลายเชื้อชาติในหลายๆประเทศทั่วโลก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นยุโรป, สหรัฐอเมริกา, เมริกาใต้, ออสเตรเลีย, ตลอดจนประเทศต่างๆในแถบเอเชีย ตะวันได้นำเสนอภาพบ้านเกิดผ่านเรติน่าของเขา ผสมผสานกับประสบการณ์ที่ได้เห็น ได้รับรู้จากมุมมองของเพื่อนศิลปินและผู้คนต่างชาติต่างภาษาจากหลากทวีป ทำให้งานของตะวันเปี่ยมล้นด้วยพลัง ซับซ้อนและลึกซึ้งหลากหลายมิติ
สำหรับผลงานครั้งนี้ ตะวันเลือกใช้วาดภาพสีน้ำพอร์เทรตผู้คนในสองจังหวัดสองประเทศ ทั้งต่างเพศหลากวัยและศาสนา เพื่อสะท้อนถึงความมีอยู่ถึงจิตวิญญาณของแต่ละปัจเจกบุคคล

เกี่ยวกับ แดเนี่ยล โลเปซ
แดเนี่ยล โลเปซ เกิดเมื่อปี 2513 เป็นชาวสเปนโดยกำเนิด เติบโตที่ประเทศสวิสเซอร์แลนด์ จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีทางด้านการท่องเที่ยวและทำงานในสายการบินแห่งหนึ่งถึง 12 ปี ก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจทิ้งทุกอย่างไว้ที่บ้านเกิด เพื่อออกเดินทางค้นหาตัวตนท่องเที่ยวไปตามประเทศต่างๆแถบเอเชีย รวมทั้งประเทศไทย ก่อนจะค้นพบความสุขที่แท้จริงของตนเองจากการเป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดความงามทางศิลปะผ่านเลนส์กล้อง จึงเข้าศึกษาต่อปริญญาโทที่มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปะโอกินาวาด้านวิช่วลอาร์ต และเริ่มต้นทำงานศิลปะด้วยวิธีอันเป็นแบบฉบับเฉพาะตัว นับจากนั้นแดเนี่ยลได้ตกลงใจปักหลักฐานที่เกาะโอกินาว่า

ผลงานภาพถ่ายของแดเนี่ยลได้รับการตีพิมพ์ไปแล้วสามเล่ม ภายใต้คอนเซปต์ “Okinawa Facades” นอกจากจะเป็นช่างภาพแล้ว และทำงานกำกับภาพศิลป์ให้กับนิตยสารเกี่ยวกับศิลปะและดนตรีท้องถิ่นโอกินาวา “The Okinawan” นอกจากนี้ แดเนี่ยลมีความสนใจในศิลปะบำบัดและการแสดงออกเชิงศิลปะ จึงร่วมเป็นสมาชิกของ Playback Theatre Company และเป็นผู้ประสานงานให้กับ Kijimura Festa ซึ่งเป็นโรงจัดมหรสพการแสดงเพื่อคนรุ่นใหม่ในโอกินาว่าด้วย
เพื่อสร้างเวทีแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดและวัฒนธรรม แดเนี่ยลจัดตั้งสมาคม Jura Okinawa เพื่อจัดแสดงงานศิลปะและรองรับศิลปินแลกเปลี่ยนจากนานาประเทศทั่วโลกกับโอกินาว่า

‘PATTANI CROSSOVER’

--“Pattani Crossover” is to search for the meaning of life and souls of people living in the southernmost of two countries.—

Two parallel worlds find its way to re-encounter, friends, Thai painter, Tawan Wattuya and Swiss photographer, Daniel López who are living in different countries and creating their works in different places, have passionately shared strong desire to create an art project together, with aiming at portraying the similarity in difference through art.

Tawan had built a strong connection with uniqueness of Okinawa culture, the distinctive character and way of life of people there when he was visiting Daniel in Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan where Daniel decided to call it home.

Daniel had shared the similar experience when he travelled to the southernmost province of Thailand, Pattani, where two artists have dicovered the cradle of civilisation and cultures with the beauty of nature.

That is the original idea of the “Pattani Crossover” initiative, two artists have started their works by travelling to these two deep south of two countries several times. Tawan had painted people he came across while Daniel had applied the pareidolia technique which required the artist’s imagination to shoot the objects or textures in different forms and shapes that reflecting the portraits of people whom Tawan had painted.

Tawan’s way of expression is through painting while Daniel makes it through a camera’s viewfinder, but under the concept of ‘Pattani Crossover’, two buddies have tended to create their arts under the idea of reflecting the works of each other. Tawan’s paintings are painted as they are photos while Daniel’s photo shooting is reflecting how the portrait painting looks like.

Like what they found in Okinawa, the diverse cultures and livings of Pattanian are absolutely different from other parts of Thailand. Two artists have shared their views and attitudes towards the experiences of finding the similarity of differences between two places.

In the sense of the commonality of being deep southerner of the country, the far south people’s core value, culture and ways of living in two countries have bizarrely shared their commonality as their cultures, their attitudes towards their lives.

The core values are utterly different from people in the other parts of states, and people know their existence yet hardly acknowledge who they are.
Japan’s Okinawa people and Thailand’s Pattani villagers have something in common.

About Tawan Wattaya
Born in 1973, Bangkok, Thailand, a Fine Art graduated from Silpakorn University, Tawan Wattuya is known for his unique approach to watercolour and thought-provoking subject matter. Wattuya’s choice of watercolour as a medium is a deliberate attempt to convey the speed and dynamism of contemporary Thai society and explore the complex contrasts of Thai culture.
Wattuya’s paintings are always poetic but nevertheless provocative regarding his critical engagement with corruption, globalisation and societal hypocrisy.
With an experience of art residencies in several countries in Europe, the US, Asia and South America, Wattuya has chosen to view his homeland from a distance, studying the social and political situation from afar to bring to his work more layers of understanding and deepness.
His works have been exhibited extensively in Bangkok, Singapore, Beijing, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Okinawa, Brisbane, and Brussels.
At the Pattani Crossover, Tawan worked on the mind-blowing technique with the colour water portraits of people from two provinces two countries from the multi-diversity to reflect the souls of the individual.

About Daniel López
Born in 1970 of Spanish origin, Daniel Lopez was raised in Switzerland. Upon finishing his studies in tourism, he worked in the airline industry for 12 years.
In 2000, he decided to quit his job and left with his camera for Asia. The journey lasted almost two years and led him to South East Asia, Korea, Japan, and finally Okinawa, where he has been living for the past twelve years. This new beginning was followed by a change of professional orientation. In 2006 he entered Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts and graduated in 2010 with a Master's degree in visual arts.
As a photographer, he published three books including "Okinawa facades". He was also main photographer and art director of "The Okinawan", a magazine dedicated to local arts and culture.
Daniel’s main photographic project focuses on wall textures and especially pareidolias (perceptions of human and animal faces on those textures).
Interested in art therapy and performing arts, he's also been a member of a playback theatre company and coordinator for Kijimuna Festa, an international theatre festival for young audiences in Okinawa.
Daniel is also active in artistic exchanges. In 2008 he created the association "Jura-Okinawa" and has been organizing exhibitions and artist in residence for artists in Okinawa and Switzerland. The last edition was held in summer 2017.
He also directed music videos including Ruykuyu Underground, onstage videos for Okinawan theatre plays, and a series of web-documentaries.
In 2016 his first feature documentary "Katabui, in the heart of Okinawa" was released in Switzerland, Germany and Japan.
