นิทรรศการ "ปล่อยวาง : Surrender" ผลงานโดย ดักลาส ดิแอซ (Douglas Diaz) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 18 สิงหาคม - 25 กันยายน 2559 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 18 สิงหาคม เวลา 18.00 น. ณ Serindia Gallery : เซรินเดีย แกเลอรี่

ดักลาส ดิแอซ เป็นศิลปินที่พักอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองเล็กๆในภูเขาของจังหวัดนาระ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เขาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานโดยใช้ความเป็นเอกลักษณ์และการท้าทายความกลัวที่แอบซ่อนอยู่ในความมืดของจิตใจ ซึ่งเขาได้สำรวจความคิดจากความเป็นธรรมชาติจากบุคคลที่มีความเป็นปักเจก ในขณะที่อีกด้านหนึ่งมันได้สำรวจหัวข้อต่างๆ ซึ่งทำให้ค้นพบความเป็นมนุษย์ของพวกเราทั้งหลาย

สำหรับนิทรรศการ ‘ปล่อยวาง’ ซึ่งเป็นการแสดงผลงานครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยของเขา เขาได้อธิบายว่า “การปล่อยวางคือสิ่งที่ยากที่สุดในช่วงชีวิตของผม การละทิ้งตัวตนถึงสิ่งที่ผมนิยามตัวเอง รวมถึงการพยายาม หาเหตุผลให้กับความเป็นไปของโลกใบนี้ คือการท้าทายต่อการเผชิญสัจธรรมของชีวิต โดยการเรียนรู้ที่จะยอมรับความเป็นมนุษย์ของตัวเอง ด้วยการยอมตนต่อความเป็นจริง สิ่งเหล่านี้นำพาผมไปสู่ความเห็นอกเห็นใจและความสงบภายใน ผมเชื่อมโยงกับทุกสิ่งในจักรวาลอย่างแท้จริง”

ผลงานชุดนี้เป็นภาพที่ฝนด้วยไส้ดินสอดำ (กราไฟต์) บางส่วนเป็นสีน้ำมันขาว แสดงถึงพื้นฐานดิบๆในตัวงาน ความเรียบง่ายและลดทอนอย่างที่เห็นแสดงออกถึงความจริงของธรรมชาติของผลงานที่เกิดขึ้น

ไม่ว่าจะในผลงานบนผืนผ้าใบขนาดใหญ่หลากหลายชิ้นหรือ เราล้วนค้นพบสิ่งที่นำไปสู่ความดิ้นรนต่อการปล่อยวาง สิ่งเหล่านี้ชักชวนให้ย้อนมองถึงความสัมพันธ์ของเราต่อสิ่งต่างๆที่อยู่นอกเหนือการควบคุม รวมถึงการตระหนักถึงการยอมรับและปล่อยวาง

Douglas Diaz (b. 1972) resides in a small town nestled in the mountain side of Nara, Japan. There he creates work that investigates his own identity and challenges the fears that lurk in the shadows of his psyche. The quest to create this work in binary in nature; on one side it is personal and individualistic, while on the other it explores the themes that make any of us human.

In SURRENDER, his first exhibition in Thailand, he writes: “Surrendering is the hardest thing I’ve faced in my lifetime. Letting go of the perception of who I think I am — how I define myself, how I make “sense” of the world — is a challenge I must face in order to accept the reality of life. I’m learning how to accept my own humanity by submitting myself to this reality. This process allows me to become more compassionate and find inner peace, and to do so is to strive towards the realization that I am connected to everything in the Universe.”

The work is dominated by intense and repetitive markings of graphite and oil, suggesting a near primitive state in which the work was realized. This reductive approach of simple yet organic forms speaks to the honesty discovered through the quest.

Whether in the oversized format of the canvas pieces or the more intimate scale of his books, we find evidence of a struggle to simply let go. This evidence invites us to look at our own relationship to things outside of our control, and to consider acceptance and surrender.
