นิทรรศการ "SA-WAT-DEE สวัสดี" ผลงานโดย สุทิน ผลทับทิม (Sutin Pontaptim) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 7 - 28 สิงหาคม 2558 และจะมีพิธีเปิดในวันที่ 7 สิงหาคม เวลา 19.00 น. ณ Sangdee Gallery & Café

การแสดงเปิดตัวเดี่ยวโดยจิตรกรชาวเชียงใหม่ สุทิน ผลทับทิม จะสร้างความประหลาดใจด้วยความเหนือจริง ตลกและเสียดสี มาร่วมพิธีเปิดและปาร์ตี้ เครื่องดื่มฟรี พร้อมดีเจสดจาก Space 360 และ Capo Ultra
แรงบันดาลใจที่อยู่เบื้องหลังงานศิลปะของสุทิน เริ่มมาจากทางแยกของวัฒนธรรมไทยและวัฒนธรรมตะวันตก สุทินรวมเอาแก่นแท้ของประเพณีต่างๆและลักษณะของประเทศไทยที่มีวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยตะวันตกแทรกซึมเข้าไปในประเพณีและค่านิยมเหล่านี้
ศิลปินได้ได้สำรวจตรวจตราประเด็นนี้ด้วยการใช้ตัวละครหลักประหนึ่งการใช้ตัวนำโชคของไทยที่ใช้ชีวิตท่ามกลางวัฒนธรรมตะวันตก ตัวละครที่ใช้มีลักษณะคล้ายยักษ์ในนิทานพื้นบ้านของไทย เป็นเทพที่มีส่วนผสมของสัตว์ต่างๆและมีรูปร่างคล้ายกระต่ายและปลาหมึก
บทบาทของตัวละครในผลงานคือการจี้ให้เห็นด้านมืดของวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยรวมทั้งทุนนิยมและความโหดร้ายของมนุษย์ ซึ่งทำให้ตัวละครนี้มีท่าทางโกรธาและไม่พอใจเป็นอย่างมากในสภาพแวดล้อมรอบตัว
สุทิน ชักชวนให้ผู้ชมคิดและตั้งคำถามว่าตัวละครซึ่งอยู่ในประเพณีมาอย่างยาวนาน สามารถอยู่รอดในสังคมสมัยใหม่ได้อย่างไร ยักษ์ที่อาศัยอยู่ในโลกแห่งความจริงนี้มีหน้าที่นำทางผู้คนในชีวิตประจำวันให้ผ่านก้าววิวัฒนาการและความก้าวหน้าต่างๆ และตอกย้ำให้เห็นถึงปัญหาที่เราพบเจอยู่ในสังคม
สุทินจบการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยราชมงคลเชียงใหม่ ในสาขาภาพพิมพ์ ตั้งแต่นั้นมาเขาได้พัฒนาผลงานภาพพิมพ์และจิตรกรรม โดยมักใช้สีอะคริลิคในการทำงานตลอดช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ผลงานของเขาถูกโชว์ทั้งในและต่างประเทศ ในอดีตที่ผ่านมาเขาได้รับเชิญให้แสดงผลงานในนิทรรศการในประเทศอินเดีย, ออสเตรเลียและไทย นอกจากนี้เขายังได้รับรางวัลจากกรมส่งเสริมการส่งออก ผลงานแสดงในครั้งนี้เป็นการเปิดตัวการแสดงเดี่ยวครั้งแรกของเขา

Katie Jade Hawker เป็นภัณฑารักษ์และผู้ก่อตั้ง Surface Arts เธอจัดโครงการที่ประสบความสำเร็จหลายโครงการทั้งในสหราชอาณาจักรและประเทศไทย เธอจบการศึกษาปริญญาโทด้าน Arts Management and Curation from Dartington College of Arts และปริญญาตรีจาก Fine Art: Sculpture from University of Brighton ในฐานะของภัณฑารักษ์ เธอมีเป้าหมายอยู่บนพื้นฐานของความร่วมมือ ความสัมพันธ์ และมักสร้างสะพานระหว่างศิลปินและวัฒนธรรมต่างๆ

Surface Arts เป็นองค์กรที่สร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลในการสร้างโครงการพำนัก ที่มีมุมมองในการอำนวยความสะดวกเพื่อส่งเสริมโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนในระยะยาว

The debut solo show, from Chiang Mai based painter Sutin Pontaptim, promises to surprise and delight with it’s surreal, comical, satire.

The inspiration behind the artwork of Pontaptim is embedded in the intersections of Thai and Western cultures. Pontaptim combines the traditions intrinsic to and characteristic of Thailand with the contemporary culture of the West infiltrating these traditions and values.

In exploring these issues the artist repeatedly uses a central character, almost like a mascot for Thai culture living amongst the contemporary Western culture. This character resembles the giant figure in Thai historical folklore; a god like creature mixed with surreal elements of other animals primarily a rabbit and a squid.

The character’s role in the paintings is to highlight the dark side of contemporary culture, including capitalism and the atrocities of man. Intentionally read to have an angry temperament and be deeply unsatisfied within each environment.

Pontaptim invites the audience to think and question how this character, with such strong traditions, can survive in the modern society. The giant character lives in the real world and has a duty to navigate everyday life through new progressions and evolutions, thus emphasizing the problems we also live with in society.

Pontaptim graduated from printmaking from Rajamangala University in Chiang Mai. Since then he has been developing his practice in printmaking and painting, which a tendency to work in acrylic paint over recent years. He works Internationally and in the past has been invited to present his work in exhibitions both in India, Australia and Thailand. He has also been granted awards from Department of Export Promotion. This is his debut solo show.

Katie Jade Hawker is a Curator and the Director of Surface Arts. She has successfully managed many projects in the UK and Thailand. She has an MA in Arts Management and Curation from Dartington College of Arts and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art: Sculpture from University of Brighton. As a curator Hawker’s focus is based on collaborations and connections, constantly building bridges between artists and cultures to develop curatorial projects and happenings.

Surface Arts is a connective organisation that builds relationships between individuals to produce residencies and other innovative projects with a view to facilitate on-going exchanges.
